2004 Rally Red Evo

So my buddy just recently got a good deal on a 2004 Rally Red Evo 8. After checking it out I realized how oxidated/faded the paint looked. I was shocked since it was only 8 years old. . . Shortly after that I found out that it was single stage paint (no clear) so I went and did a test panel to show him what that red could look like and he was ecstatic. We setup a date and yesterday happened to be the day.

I realize this car takes more work to keep it up than a normal car with clear does but I swear the previous owner not only chose to ignore the appearance but it looked like he chose to make it worse. . . We will get to the pictures so you can see what I'm referring to.

Subject: 2004 Rally Red Mitsu Evo 8

Goal: Remove all oxidation and swirls

Products used:

UWW+

Mothers Clay

Glassworkz

Menzerna FG400

Megs MF Cutting Pads

BNS Green Pads

IPA Wipedown

Cloud 9

And away we go:

He got into town and we started around 11 am. Upon arrival:

Warmed up the garage and let all the slush and ice melt off the car. It was 25 degree's out so no hose washing. . .

Wiped her down with UWW+ mix. Got rid of some of the water spots and dirt and uncovered this. . . :

Time to get down to it. . . Originally tried FG400 on an Orange BnS pad but that wasn't removing the swirls in the amount of passes I was looking to do. Tried a MF pad with fg400 on it and went to work. Perfect combo! Even finished down well enough to 1 step this monster:

This was a bloodbath . . Careful of high spots and rounded edges.

Paint Transfer Removal

(Ignore the product on the bumper) Paint transfer on rear bumper, the black that's left is missing paint down to the actual bumper:

One of my favorites:

On the plastic the fg400 and mf pad were leaving buffing marks so I followed that with a fg400 on a green bns pad and it pulled those right out and left it in much better shape:

Hood. . . Sooo much sealant pop at the front of the hood. The paint was better as it went towards the back of the car:

Sadly I was interupted by work (since I was on call) so we didn't get done in time for daylight so I did my best to get some pictures with the light sources we had outside.

Any I save the best (IMO) for last (this picture was not edited in any way, it was exported from the camera, converted to jpeg and uploaded):

Really nice work! Did you consider any of the Coatings for lsp?

Thanks!

I have twice explained to him how all the oxidation happened and that it would happen again if not taken care of and he seemed to understand. At that point I explained to him opti-coating and that would allow him to not worry about waxing/sealing for years instead of months with a typical wax/sealant. I also explained that it would stop the oxidation from coming back as long as it was still on the vehicle. He shrugged it off. He may be back for it but we will see.

I still don't understand why he WOULDNT want to pay the little bit extra to have it Opti Coated..it just doesn't make a ton of sense. Nonetheless, wonderful job at truly restoring this absolutely hammered Evo!! Was it a re-spray or something? It doesn't make a lot of sense why it would be SS paint? Great job Dan!
