What brand Pads do you use for your PC?



I have been checking with places in my area for a source for pads without having to order them online. So far I have found 3M (Waffle and regular), Meguiars (What I have been using), and some other brands I do not remember the names of.



I also found a distributor of Stinger products, I had never heard of them but the guy says they have been making detailing products for a long time and supply a lot of the detail shops and dealerships ( I know that could be a bad thing also). Has anyone heard of them or used their products.

Hey Kev how do you like the Meguiar's pads? I just picked up two yellow and one marroon pad yesterday from FinishMaster but haven't had the chance to use them yet. They are six inch pads with velcro backing so I hope that they will work well with the backing pad that I bought from CMA.

I'm also curious about the 3M pads because I should be able to get those locally from FinishMaster as well.

I like the meguiars, I have a few of the yellow polishing pads and they worked really well with the 3M SMR and IHG I used. I would buy them again but the place that I found the meguiars locally only carried the 8" pads ( I like the smaller ones).

I use the CMA kit and the Meguiar's yellow pads. I bought a couple others from Detailing Depot that I haven't used yet (cuttiing orange and super soft grey).



IMO, the Meguiar's yellow and the CMA white do exactly the same thing. I can't tell a diff.

btw my cost for the Meguiar's yellow 6" finishing pad was $11 and my cost for the maroon 6" cutting pad was $10 from FinishMaster.

I have been finding prices between $7 and $12. It depends on the store more than the brand. I have found the Meguiars (Unfortunatly the 8") for $8. I have found the 3M for $10 and $12, same pad. The Stinger Distributor has the pads for $7.50. I think I may try them out.

I found the Lake Country pads (the ones CMA sells) for $6.25 a pop at http://www.smartshoppersinc.com/. They are the 7 1/2" size but supposedly will work with the 6" backing plate. You have to order $50 worth though so I haven't ordered any yet.

I use the 3M Perfect-It Foam DA Glazing Pad. They're a black waffle style, for velcro backing.



The 3M part # is 05729

Have you used any of the other brands to compare the 3M with? Does the waffle pattern soak up more product, is it more or less abrasive? These are easy to find locally and if they are really good I would like to try them. I was just concerned about the waffle pattern.

Kev - I've also used the white flat ones. The advantages of waffle have to do with ability of air to circulate underneath it, preventing heat build up. This allows you to work a product longer, before it hardens.



It's a very soft pad (as glazing pads are), so it's really stupid proof. You can't hurt the paint with it, although using aggressive products with them can be frustrating since they're so soft.



I'm testing some prototype waffle pads that are slightly more aggressive, for use with polishes and light compounds. The black pads can be a problem with older paint, since it's harder than fresh paint, so a more aggressive pad will be able to help with that.



For 90% of our use, I think the black 3M waffle pad's the best. And no, it doesn't really soak up product (unless you put too much on to begin with, which is a common problem).

This bike was my first full detail in the motorcycle category. My client wanted it to look brand new, so I striped this bad boy down and got into the nitty and the gritty.

The bike came to me looking pretty good to the naked eye. But taking a closer look at things you could tell it needed some TLC.

OPT opti-seal (on the wheels)

Process:

I removed most of the body panels and the seats so I could get into all the tight places. I used my new Troybilt pressure washer to knock off all the bad stuff and used my EZ detail brushes to get in all the tight spots. I let some WD-40 soak on the chain and sprocket for a little bit to soak in and eat at all the clumped up grease. after lots of scrubbing I went back over with some degreaser to get all of the WD-40 off. I used the 1 bucket method w/ grit guard and the lowes Grout sponge with some RainX Wash and wax that was laying arround. After the good thorough wash and degrease I clay bared it With the Red automagic clay using the diluted ratio of ONR.

So it came to me like this

After the wash I pulled it in and clayed it

Now the real surface is revealed!

I wet sanded the scratches with 2000 grit paper and followed it up with some 4000 on my DA backing plate with the interface foam pad. I tried somthing new with my Griot's 3" Orbital. I usually use my Pneumatic Orbital for wetsanding. but I wanted to know if it would work with the Griots orbital, and it worked AMAZINGLY

I tried out the HD UNO for the first time on this bike. I liked it, It was nice just changing out only the pads. After a few passes with the orange just pop on the green pad do a few passes with it then pop on the White finishing pad and wipe off. Thats alot better then compounding then wipe, change pad, polish then wipe, and change pads and finish down, wipe and then check it. BUT.......I wasn't happy with the final finish after all that. so I would go back and correct it with M105 and M205. I also had to pull out the Rotary for some of those sand scratchs and UNO let me down on those too. So I am just going to stick with the Meg Twins.

Then after everything was polished down I applied a coat of BFWD with the griots 3" orbital w/ LC Blue pad

While that was curing, I polished out the muffler and all the aluminum pegs and brackets using White diamond polish.

After all that, I removed the BFWD and applied a thin coat of DoDo Juice SuperNatural.
