2002 F-150 SuperCrew - Souveranized ;-) (9 photos)

Seven hours total work time to do an interior and exterior detail on my dad's '02 F-150 Supercrew. Considering the soft paint, that my dad is not exactly an Autopian (or even remotely close), and the truck is actually used as a truck on a regular basis, I did not kill myself this time like I dad back in September '04 (20 hours!!).

No interior shots as it was pretty clean overall. Just vacuumed, applied Pinnacle V&R Dressing, Pinnacle Conditioner, and cleaned the glass.

Exterior Process:

-Wash with 1Z Exclusiv

-SSR1 over the entire truck with a Sonus Blue pad. Just wanted to get rid of some hazing from using more abrasive polishes about six weeks ago

-AIO with Sonus Blue pad

-Wolfgang Deep Gloss Sealant applied via PC with Sonus Gray pad

-Souveran

-Vroom Tire Dressing (testing)

-303 in wheel wells

-AIO & Wolfgang on all trim

-Pinnacle Cycle Metal strips on all chrome

-Poorboy's Wheel Sealant on rims

-Invisible Glass

I'll admit that I was skeptical of what Souveran could do on black but boy was I proven wrong. This is absolutely my favorite carnauba wax for all colors. Wolfgang looked great by itself but Souveran really turned the black paint a deep, liquid black.

Before (note: I had polished most of the truck using Pinnacle ASR and SSR2.5 with a cutting pad about six weeks ago. I was trying to beat an approaching storm and it left the paint with a nice haze)

You can see hazing under the filth in this picture:

Sorry about the dirt on the running board. Fixed. ;)

Remember I said the paint is soft? Looks okay from a a couple of feet away but up close you can see micromarring from SSR1 and a polishing pad. This paint marrs so easily that I simply cannot keep up with it.

Thats funny, the red paint on my LIghtning seems to be fairly hard. Not like Audi hard, but it doesnt mar to easily. Your truck looks great BTW. Very deep, wet lookinh black.

Nice work!

I was also having minor micro-marring problems on my black car. They were only visible under close scrunity, either in direct sun or under a shop lamp. Maybe my technique was flawed.

Then I gave Menzerna FPII a shot, and iit was the first polish I had found to clear up those blemishes.

Very nice work :xyxthumbs It looks great.

Don't know how you'd be skeptical of Souveran :p . It plain rocks! Be prepared to reapply once a month.

Try using a finishing pad or use a glaze / light polish like VM or One Grand Omega Glaze to remove those light marring marks. Or maybe you didn't work the polish long enough?

Personally, I'd save your money and not use 303 in the wheel wells. You're pouring $$$ down the drain. Use traditional Armor All. It'll last just as long, look great and save your wallet. You can buy it real cheap at Coscto. Just a tip :p

So what's the scoop on Vroom?

Again, nice work :)

I have not tried a finishing pad but I have used the lightest cutting pads I have. Honestly, I do not think it is possible to make the paint on this truck perfect, and as I said, it isn't worth the effort because the truck is actually used as a truck on a regular basis.

Scoop on Vroom is that it seems to be a decent product. Going on a week now since I applied it to the tires on my car and they still look great. It is supposed to rain a little this weekend so I'll see how it does when the tires get wet.

Nice work. Yes black shows all, look at it the wrong way and it marrs.

Very true, breathing on it will marr the paint! But god they look good after a good polishing and waxing! Stays that way for all of 5 minutes if you are lucky! :doh

Excellent work! You can really see the Souveran 'glow' on the tailgate. I know what you mean about Souveran. I used it today on a red Lexus (over Shokar) and comparing panels, you could really see the darkening and wetting effect of Souveran.

I have the same marring problem with my paint. It is just very soft paint. #80 with a polishing pad and either RMG, VM, AIO or PwC with a blue Propel pad really does a good job eliminating it.

Looks like you repainted it  ;)

Those full size pickups can be tiresome, I usually need some sort of step just to get to the center of the hood and end up climbing up the bed to get to the roof. Great job all around though. :xyxthumbs

Heh, I used a step ladder to reach the center of the hood up near the windshield. I'm just a few inches too short to being able to reach it easily. ;) Also, I decided it is easier to reach the roof by opening the doors and standing on the running boards. At least there is easy access to the roof...my mom's 4Runner is a PITA.

It is expensive but I use so little 303 anymore that a single bottle lasts me well over a year. I have pretty well stopped using it for everything I actually purchased it for. When my current bottle is used up I will find a cheaper product to use.

Lee,

If you work on your neighbor's truck, tell me if you think the paint is soft. It is still amazing to me just how soft the paint on my dad's truck really is.

So deep and soo wet :).

Funny you say the paint is soft. In my experiences, the paint easily chips, but its a bit harder to polish out defects than say, my Integra or any Honda for that matter.

Nice work overall!
