2001 VW Passat: Detailed for a fellow detailer

Yeh, I'm not feeling very creative with titles tonight, sorry.

Anyways, I detailed this Passat for a fellow member today, furnace17 (Dennis), in preparation for a clear bra installation early next week. Dennis is just like you and I. He can find every little defect and it bothers him, so I knew I had my work cut out for me :).

The paint wasn't in terrible shape. The nose (fenders, hood, and front bumper cover) were painted recently and the shop did a very nice job in matching the color and OP (like factory). The rest of the car had moderate swirling and bonded contaminants. The swirling on the nose was from a local car wash who apparently like the abrasive approach. Some of the stuff on the hood was very deep and I did not want to cut extremely hard (I polished it 4 times to begin with) so we had to live with 95-98% of perfect. I touched up a few areas that were chipped and did the other bells and whistles for an exterior detail. My finals were:

-PB SS&S wash

-Optimum Clay with SS&S as lube

-Hi-Temp Heavy Cut via rotary and LC Cutting Pad @ 1500 rpm

-Menzerna FPII via rotary and LC Polishing Pad @ 1500 rpm

-Z6 Wipedown

-Z2 Pro by hand on paint and windows

-Z8 Wipedown

-PB Wheel Sealant on Wheels

-Turbo Wax Tire Gel on tires

-Meguiar's Hyper Dressing cut 1:1 in wells

-PB Trim Restorer on all plastic trim

Freakin AWESOME....makes me want a new and better camera to capture the wetness and clearness your pics has. As always great job!

The pictures do look awesome!

As I was going through them I thought, I bet he uses a tripod. Well low and behold check out the third picture. The reflections are so clear and crisp you can see Sean squatting with the camera and tripod :)

I have to start using one too because my shaky a** can't hold the camera still enough to be that perfect :grinno:

Looks great :xyxthumbs

Are those the standard wheels, there does seem to be a larger than usual gap between the wheels and the body

Thank you everyone :).

Otravez: I use a Canon Powershot A610. The settings were aperature priority set at 0.0; auto everything else.

twitch: Yes! Honestly, it really does make the difference. I picked up the one I'm using off ebay. It's a aluminum Samsonite and raises to about 5 or so ft. tall. Its very light and compacts down to about 18 inches long. I like it a lot and can bring it everywhere.

Lowejackson: I believe everything is stock. The car might be AWD, but I'm not too sure.

Hey everyone, just to confirm, Sean did a GREAT job! My car hadn't been polished/waxed/sealed in over 12 months! And that's after a few ski trips last winter...

The reflections are amazing in the paint, it really looks like a new car. This was definitely worth the 2 hr drive from NYC to Connecticut!

Yes, the wheel gap is high, because the car is stock. It's NOT 4wd, just front. I will be lowering the car in the future, probably on an Eibach Pro system. But priorities are: protecting the paint, general maintence, APR chip, suspension, wheels. So it will be a while before it's lowered. Plus, there are SO many potholes in NYC...you need an SUV more in NYC than in the countryside...

Anyways, thanks Sean and great job!

What a nice job! I'm always impressed when somebody gets a flawless finish with only the rotary (and just two products too!).

Furnace, good move, taking it to him :xyxthumbs

Yeah, tripods are great; I can't hand-hold at low speeds either. There's an old saying that while mediocre photographers debate which camera is best, *good* photographers talk about their tripods ;) I'm currently looking for one that goes almost flat so I can take pics of undercarriages. Probably gonna buy the one from Really Right Stuff, but the cost is making me hesitate...

Sounds like we're sporting the same tripod :)

Which model do you have. I searched Ebay briefly and came across a few different ones.

You also have the same camera I use. The A610. It was a xmas gift to my g/f and I use it to take all my shots too :D

I still have to play around with the settings on it. It's been mostly on Auto since we got it.

thanks.
