2000 / 1,500 grit then what??

I am going to try my hand at color sanding (on a junk car) and was curious to know what product would you use after hitting a spot with 2000 or 1,500 grit sandpaper?



Most of my collection consists of lightweight stuff to just remove swirls so I am trying to reduce the amount of products I buy to get rid of the marks left after wet sanding. Since I won't be doing this often I don't want 3-4 more bottles laying around.



I have a PC and rotary and have all the foam pads out there, I think think the most abrasive pad i have is the sonus orange and it goes down from there - green, grey, blue, white.



Any ideas on what products I should try after the wet sanding??? thx.
 
IMO you need a wool cutting pad and a heavy cut compound.



Sounds like the most aggresive pad you have is a light cutting pad, that wont *cut it*...pun intended :lol

BUT, it dosent sound like thats what he will be using



My point is it is better to be preppared than screwed
 
I just did two of my cars, although I finished with 2500 grit paper. One car had an acrylic urethane finish and was about 7 years old. The other was painted with lacquer that paint job is probably 15 years old. I used a 1750 rpm rotary, a 3M waffle finishing pad, and 3M Medium cut microfinishing compound (39001). It took two passes to remove the sanding scratches on the urethane paint and only one with the lacquer.



This was the first time that I'd ever tried the 39001 and was really impressed by it. I also tried using Menzerna IP and Meguiars #83, but neither was as aggressive as I liked.



Pictures of the car with the urethane paint are here. I haven't posted the car with the lacquer paint yet but I will. I had forgotten just how good freshly polished lacquer paint looks.
 
sounds like I will have to get me a wool pad. what about products compounds/polishes - which would be your top 2 choices to remove 2,000 grit marks? Didn't know they made 2500 and 3000, the auto paint store i went to said they the highest grit they carry is 2,000.

For me it would be edge yellow wool and green wool and OHC.





Yes, wetsanding papers get all the way up to something stupid like 10,000 grit :lol



Did you ask them if they could order you 2500 and 3000 grit? They might not carry it but they may be able to order it.



Also make sure the papers your using are actually meant for color sanding/automotive wetsanding/clear coat sanding ect.

Choice #1: If you haven't taken off too much paint with the 2,000 grit: lightly sand with 3,000 grit (3M Trizact makes an excellent kit...expensive stuff), then use compound and cutting pad.



Choice #2: Wool pad and 3M Extra Cut compound.



I just used #2 on a black metallic BMW yesterday. Here's the results on the hood.
