Hi there, REALLY love this site. I only THOUGHT I was a perfectionist before.

#1 - Where can I find a breakdown of all the abbreviations used in the forums?

#2 - When you guys do this much buffing/polishing aren't you going to eventually wear through the clearcoat and the paint at some point?

I wish I had the money for some of the products you all recommend, and for a PC. My wife might disown me if I owned one of those though. Spend all my weekends in the driveway.

A: Home Page-Left Hand Side- â€ËœSecret Decoder Ringâ€â„¢ for abbreviations

A: Although the clear coat is very thin, it has a thickness of 2-3Mils, removing more that 0.3 mil (0.0003") of clear coat will cause premature paint film failure. As a point of reference a sheet of copy paper is 3.5Mil (0.0035") a surface scratch that will `catch' your fingernail is approximately 0.004" deep. With normal car care polishes and proper use it would take a long time to remove sufficient paint for it to become a problem. This is not to say that this could not happen.

It would require a lot of effort or serious negligence to go through the clear coat. Generally speaking, this is not an area to worry about

Heh heh, don't worry about all the fancy equipment we're always talking about. You can get great results by hand with a very limited expenditure.

As others have said, the whole "polish off your clearcoat" thing is usually quite exaggerated. But it *is* a valid issue, which is why some of us make such a *huge* deal out of not marring the finish in the first place. IMO the damage usually happens when the vehicle is washed/dried, so that's the place to start being a perfectionist.

don't use abrasive polishes. When I got my car I had many swirls. I used worked with an abrasive polish, but started out with a non abrasive till gone. That was two years ago and haven't since had to polish besides Klasse All In One, but it's not abrasive. Clean you paint well every detail, use a sealent (perfer Klasse Sealent Glaze) to protect clear coat, and wash correctly and often. That's what I do and it works. Use a good car shampoo like P21S or Sonus; 2 buckets (one for soap and other to rinse mits), two MF or chennille mits. Don't go to a car wash and use there brushes or anything that touches the car. Those brushes have brake dust and god knows what else on it. Hope I helped!
