1Z Paint Polish with Zaino?

I"ve been using Zaino for over a year on my black 97 VW GTI and have really liked the results. I have only been applying by hand and my car still has a ton of swirls.

I've decided to try to step it up a notch and buy a Porter Cable 7424 kit from Autopia.

One thing I like about the Zaino was that it lasted a really long time. In the summer, I don't mind detailing my car regularly since the summer weather in Seattle is great. But it rains from october through april pretty regularly making detailing not much fun. Hence the reason for a good synthetic like Zaino.

I haven't been reading much on detailing ever since I got set on Zaino, but now I'm back reading the forums since I want to buy a PC 7424, it seems that a real favorite is the 1Z paint polish for swirl removal with a PC.

Just wondering if I should use the 1Z PP with the PC then followed by Zaino?

Using any of the 1Z products is a pleasing experience. I would get all 3 - ULTRA for those hard to remove marks, PAINT POLISH for the run of the mill marring and the METALLIC for a final polish product. I believe the 1Z line contains oils and/or fillers, so before you Zaino, do an 50/50 water/alcohol wipedown to remove them. OR use my favorite last step polish -- Menzerna FP -- the paint will squeek when you wipe off the residue with a MF. I use the original FP and not the FP II - as of 2 weeks ago, CMA still had some of the old stuff left, so I bought 4 32 OZ bottles .....

I agree with Gonzo re: the 1Z polishes. 1Z Paint Polish (green can) is my fave all purpose polish with a PC. Use it with a yellow polishing pad, crank up the speed and go to town. I've found my paint needs almost no finer polishing afterwards but you be the judge on your paint.

You can do an alcohol wipe down or a full wash after polishing and before Zaino. Either will be enough to remove residual oils and whatnot.

The 1Z / Zaino combo is a killer one IMO and one I use frequently when detailing customer's cars. There are other good combos out there but not one that's better IMO.

From your replies, I'm seeing that you are recommending 1Z PP (green can) followed by some washing step to get rid of the fillers+oils.

questions:

1) There was a mention 1Z Metal Polish, Menzerna FP and Menzerna FP II. I'm confused as to whether these are replacements to Zaino, or between 1Z PP and Zaino.

2) My car has significant swirling, so I may have to go with 1Z Ultra Paint Polish first. If I do that, do I do 1Z UPP, followed by 1Z PP then wash, then Zaino?

3) This will be my first tiem every using a PC to apply polish, wax, etc. I'm going to be buying the kit from Autopia. Suggestion was to use Yellow pad on high setting to apply 1Z PP. Buff off by hand or with PC? What color pad? What about 1Z UPP or Zaino?

Q0: The one you didn't ask. Clay the car before doing any polishing unless you've already done that in the last couple of weeks. You don't want the polisher to dislodge crud attached to the paint and then rub it all over the paint - it will make more scratches than you are trying to repair.

Q1: They are all polishes used to remove/reduce the defects in your paint PRIOR to applying any finish (like Zaino, Klasse, whatever). I like the METALLIC or FP -- for me almost exclusively -- as last step polishing product to really make the paint look good before any finish. Apply no finish until you are pleased with the paint's [hopefully flawless, but in reality some flaws will remain] finish. You could divide the vehicle into 1/3's and polish, then finish each in turn

Q2: ULTRA, definitely followed by PAINT POLISH, and possibly METALLIC or FP I (or II), wash, then your Zaino

Q3: ULTRA with a cutting or polish pad; PAINT POLISH with a polishing pad; METALLIC or FP with finishing pad at #6 on PC. You should consider at minimum 2 of each pad type, but get 3 or 4 if you can afford to. Work products until dry and wipe remaining residue off with MF towels. Minimum of a dozen MF towels for the wipe work, 2 MF drying towels.
