I got my Makita 9227 Rotary on Friday and just had to try it out on something :naughty

The light rotary and wetsanding experience I have had in the past has been at my local bodyshop, so things couldn't really have gone downhill......to far I guess :)

This 2001 VW got a key to it unfortunately, so I decided to get to work on it.

Post some after pics Nick when you finsh! Your da man for the job! You do some awsome work:bigups

This is a picture after using 3M's 2000 grade wet/dry sandpaper. It is a good feeling paper, but I prefer the Meg's Unigrit ones. Can you tell where the scratch is?

Here is one that is closer up at the longer scratch. I definitely did not get it all :angry but I did not want to go "too" far. This was definitely deeper than I previously thought. Overall, I was pleased to see how uniform the sanding went.

:wait Im tryin to read the news paper article :lmfao ........ But to answer your question bout the scratch i cant really tell:dunno

Here is the new Beast of a Rotary and the new Edge 2000 Durafoam pads. It's a yellow cutting and a blue polishing

Here is the scratch after using 3M's Perfect It II Rubbing Compound. My body shop uses this, and swears by it. You can't really feel the abrasives in it, not like Poorboy's SSR3, or even 2.5. I had the speed up at 1400rpms with the Edge Yellow pad.

Nick - That's the 6" model pad, right? Have you had a chance to compare those with the larger beveled edge model? I'd be interested in hearing your description of how the two differed in feel and performance.

After the inital compounding, I used Poorboy's SSR2 to remove the rotary marks with an Edge pad on 1800rpm. There was no hazing, which was good, and SSR2 put me on my way. I could have sealed from here, but I wanted the best results, so I took SSR1 with a PC and Edge Blue pad at 5, then sealed with EX by hand.

Here is the final result at another angle. The main scratch is definitely not as deep and not nearly as visable before. Unless I was really looking for it, I wouldn't have noticed it was there. The side scratches were totally gone.

I've got some practicing to do, but it was definitely a great start.

Marj,

I personally haven't tried the larger pads out. They would probably be very effective on the larger panels, but for this small job and all the things I had to dodge, they worked out great. I do have an Edge 2000 Yellow/Black wool on the way which will be fun to use also.

Very nice work Nick! :bigups

Take you time getting use to the rotary, and you will find it a great asset!

Yeah, the rotary is really a beast compared the the PC. A kid can easily handle the PC. If you do a weight transer on the rotary, is will spin out of control easily. I sure as anything wouldn't have done this project without prior experience, but with some more frequent use of the rotary, I'm sure better contril will come. I can get scrap pieces at the body shop, which might be fun to experiement too.

very nice Nick...:bigups... with your experience and a little more practice you'll feel right at home with the rotary in your hand:)

Looks great Nick. Just a question though (because I've never wet sanded). Why would you sand the whole trunk lid instead of just the trouble area? I've got an Aurora (Black) in my garage that is real rough and I'm considering wetsanding prior to SSR3 etc. Any tips would be appreciated.
