1st Paint Makeover, I need help.

AMDin93103

I like cheese.
I bought my charcoal grey sedan back in Sept. and waxed it right away. I don't remember what wax I used but I have a call in to my friend to refresh my memory. Since then I have done a fair amount of research but this is the first site I have come across that is (for the most part) objective towards products.

My paint is in pretty good shape (some hood pitting slight scratches in spots) but for peace of mind I would like to take a few days to give it a beautiful gloss but more imporantly, protection. I park under an overhang 2-4 days a week and it sits at my workplace 5 d/wk. From various resources I have determined that I should:

1.Clay

2.Polish with a low abrasive compound

3.Wax

What I don't know is which compound or what wax protects from the weather (North Cali not North Pole!) the best and is that the propper order. Is there anything else you can suggest adding to the process?

Whole job applicators incl. I would like to spend ballpark $125. Sorry for the thesis, just trying to be thorough. TIA. -Stu.

Welcome to Autopia :wavey

I have a habit of suggesting to newbies that they should consider buying the Autopia Guide to Detailing at www.autopia-carcare.com and I think you'd be a beneficiary of its information. You can download the first 8 chapters free as a preview. But the entire book will refocus you on what to do and how to do it. Its money well spent.

As for compounds its hard to say exactly what will work since none of us can actually see your car. The basic rule of thumb is to start with mild polishes and work your way more aggressively until you get the results you want, if obtainable at all. For use by hand (instead of machine) I usually recommend something a little more aggressive as it will help you get the job done while minimizing physical work. Consider something like Meguiar's #2 Fine Cut Cleaner, 3M Fine Cut Rubbing Compound, or similar if your car shows a lot of swirls and some light oxidation and staining. If the paint is in excellent condition, a milder polish like a swirl mark remover is good.

Hope this helps.
