1999 Custom Painted VW Beetle - Detailed

OCDinPDX

Paint Ph.D
I detailed this car almost a year ago but I figured I'd share it.

This Bug started life as your run-of-the-mill VW New Beetle in black. Originally purchased for sale by local VW dealer Herzog-Meier, it was sent to Seattle to be custom-painted as a promotional tool. This was back when the New Beetle was the coolest thing since sliced bread. The paint job alone cost $5,000 and according to the owner, they layered the clearcoat on there big time. Once the dealer was done with it, they sold it at list and it's now owned by a family friend who owns (as you can tell), a meat market that makes awesome bento.

This used my standard barrage of Griot's garage products. Enjoy.

Fairly typical abuse...

The engine was just beyond gross...

As was the fuel filler cap

And the trunk handle....

And after...

Please ignore the stray MF cloth...I had not yet dressed the tires and was under tight time restrictions.

Still some very light swirls left over...the clearcoat was harder than nails but I think the flame really pops here.

Much better....

Thanks for looking. :)

Pretty cool car! I just bought my daughter a black 05 Beetle, fun little car to drive. Been wondering what one fixed up might look like.

Thanks for sharing. Good work.

Although I know you probably could have perfected the finish more than that, it's nice to see someone post a less than perfect turn around because the reality is not every finish is gonna come out perfect every time.

With quite a few of my daily driver 3 hour details, that's as good as I try to make it and they are very happy.

Thanks...it was really a tough mother because the swirls and scratches looked much worse under my halogens than they did under the sun. :hmmm:

Not only that, this was my first paying job with actual correction and I was still feeling my way through the process.
