1999 Accord - Bumper repair and Detail (lots of pics)

Well, a while back I posted a few pictures of a bumper that was really marked up. Well, I finally got the guts to try and fix it. I first cleaned the car up really good and then masked off the area to work on. I sanded all the paint of the area down to the bare black plastic using 60 grit. I then smoothed it out using 320grit. I decided that i could use a filler but, didnt really see the need for the extra step since the primer would fill the scratches from the sandpaper. So, i put a couple coats of primer on the bumper and sanded between steps to help get rid of the fine scratches and pieces of plastic that were raised up in the paint. After priming i used a primer sealer. Next i put on a several coats of the paint and then tried to blend it into the surrounding area as much as possible. Finally, I clearcoated the area and surrounding parts. Also, i was using a aerosol can that i got from automotivetouchup.com. After finishing this, i detailed the rest of the car with #M83 and #M80 and put two coats of #M16 on it.

Overall, there is a slight difference in the paint. However it is not that noticeable and you have to be looking for it. It stands out to me....but to the owners it wasnt. Plus, it still looks better than before. I think the results are good cause the other paint is about 10 years old and it is outside all the time so the sun has faded it some.

Here are the befores....

Considering the vintage and net worth of the car, I'd say it looks damn good! Nice effort.

Darrell Waltrip sells Honda and Volvo??? Seems very un-American!

Yeah, the total cost for the repair was around $60-70. A shop would have no doubt charged a lot more than that....probably around $400+.....plus it was a learning experience for me. First time to ever do something like that.

Last time I inquired about getting a sandblasted front bumper cover repainted, they quoted me $600. Something tells me they didn't really want to do the job ;)

Nice job on the detail, especially with the bumper repair. Nice to see some work from some of the local Nashville-area detailers every once in a while. Keep up the good work.

I think he races Toyotas, doesn't he?

Hey, great job on the bumper! I'm inspired.

Wow... great job getting that rear bumper mark out of there. I'm assuming all that black was paint and it didn't get to the skin?
