1998 MB C230 Before and After

My friend has been bugging me for the last year or so to detail his Mercedes C230. I didn't have much to do this weekend and I knew the weather forcast was supposed to be great, so I reluctantly agreed. I hadn't been in his car since it was nearly new and I know he doesn't keep up with cleaning the inside or out, but nothing could have prepared me for the filth ball that awaited me.

Inside - He has two young boys and makes frequent trips to the beach, so there was lots of sand, stuck candy/gum, bits of toys and food wrappers stuck in all the crevises (I think they jam the garbage in there instead of having to throw it out). The light tan leather seats were a dark beige.

Exterior - hasn't been washed in 1.5 years. Has massive swirls from the "brushless" car wash, had some rotary halos on the hood (I guess from the dealer) and had some major scratched on the sides from what he said was the lawnmower and on the roof from hauling sheetrock without a rack.

I really didn't get the interior nearly as nice as I would have liked, and nothing I tried got the leather back to original, but after almost 2 hours it was 100% better than it was before.

The exterior jsut adter a wash and clay there was a marked inprovement. I used ScratchX to remove the scratches (first time using this and it's great stuff) seemed to be nearly half the car. Then buffed the entire car with DACP with a yellow pad then S100. I was able to get probably 90% of the swirls out, but DACP was the most agressive stuff I had with me.

Again I didn't get everything up to the standards I would have liked, but for a free job for a friend, it was pretty good. My firend was really nervous when I busted out the PC, but in the end all he kept saying was "This is unbelieveable, it's like a new car". he called in the middle of the night and left a message on my cell thanking me again and again. That was reward enough.

The killer was his car sits outside 24/7 and the wife came out and said that the spriklers were going to come on in the morning and he said "that's ok, there's wax on it now". DOH!!!!!

The pictures I took are not a fair comparison as the befores are in direct sunlite and the afters are when the sun had gone behind the house, but it gives a decent idea of the difference. Here are some of the before pics.

Nasty hood:

Lots of swirls:

Great recovery of the finish! DACP did all that? Well Done!!

Keep it up!

Thanks for all the complements guys.

The horizontal areas were the worst and I wound up having to go over most of those areas twice with DACP and a yellow pad. Honestly I've never had anything this bad, so I don't own anything more aggressive. I know a wool pad would have been more aggressive, but do you have any recommendations on more aggresive products to use?

When I said that I used ScratchX on what seamed like nearly half the car, I wasn't kidding too much (probably 1/4 of the car). There were so many deep scratches it was scary. Many of them I was only able to minimize (not get rid of completely) for fear of going through the clear. I was amazed at how much heat you can generate by hand in a small spot.

I wanted to put on some mother's sealant glaze to hide the remaining swirls before I put on the S100, and dress what little black trim there was, but I just didn't have time plus I was kind of tired.

And don't worry, he was very appreciative. He tried to give me cash, but I just didn't feel right taking it from a freind. I'll make him pay for drinks a few nights soon.

Great job! I love these before and afters on slightly older model cars. Did you give him tips on how to keep it looking good?

I did a job for a freind a couple of months ago from work and I gave him a pint of Quickshine and an MF towel. He keeps it very neat and clean now and continues to ask me questions on keeping it that way. Of coarse, I learned alot of it here at Autopia.

Again....good job on that Benz :up :up :up

Take care..........VINCE :wavey

Looks fantastic! Too bad all that hard work will go down the drain when the sprinkler etch the paint. Oh well, just make sure you charge him next time!

FOR FREE !!! I think that job deserves at least a Filet Mignon dinner and a 12 pack of the beer of your choice. Absolutely great work !!!

People will always tell you not to give freebies away to friends or family and at first I thought that advice was good. But I think if you have the time and a a friend asks you to help him out, you should.

Yes, I have one of the side with all the scratches, but that side was next to a row of hedges and needed to be taken with a flash so didn't come out too well. All the trim came out looking whitish, like it had residue on it (which I swear it didn't).

It's at home so I'll have to post later this evening.

As promised, here is the after pic of the side. As I said, it looks worse than it is because of the flash and over exposure. As I took this pic I realized that there was some wax residue that I missed in the front quater just above the bump strip. That white/yellow gunk above and below the bump strip is actually the adhesive used to hold it on. I couldn't do anything about that

Hope this crappy pic doesn't ruin everyones impression, but at least it shows the scratches are gone. And ewwww, dirty wheel wells, I wasn't going to touch those.

Michael
