The Victim: A poorly taken care of 1990 Mazda Miata with 80k. Owner told me he hasnt washed it in over 2 years and it sits outside all the time.

Diagnosis: Badly oxidized paint. Heavy Swirls Paint failure on front bumper and side mirrors. CAKED on wheel brake dust

Treatment: All four wheels took me 1 hour and 30 minutes to clean. I used Dawn Wash, Multiple application of A2Z, and #0000 Steel wool with gloves.

Here's the before:

The exterior was in pretty bad shape.

My process:

1. Wash with NXT wash

2. Clay entire car with Mothers Gold Clay

3. Wet sanded two area of paint transfers from hitting pole on the front side and rear side bumper with 2000 grit sand paper and polished the sand marks with Menzerna Power Gloss with a yellow cut pad via Rotary @ 1500rpms

4. Entire car got Menzerna IP via Rotary @1500 Rpms via Orange Cut pad. Some area needed multiple passes. I also had to clean the pad every 2x2 section to clean it free of paint transfer and oxidation gumming up the pads.

5. Entire car got Menzerna FPII via Rotary @ 1500 Rpms with white polish pad.

6. I used Collinite IW845 as LSP via PC with grey finish pad.

7. Glass Cleaned with Stoners IG

8. Tires got NXT insane shine

9. Wheel wells got AA

After everything was said and done. I could not save the front bumper and side view mirrors. The paint was completely dead. They did brighten up but were still dull and swirled.

My losses were two pads....may they RIP :(

The owner was astonished by the results and after 8 hours of work so was I ;)

You're missing a pic of the owner's face when he first saw it.

If it were me, it'd look something like this: :shocked or

Great work once again. :xyxthumbs :up :bow

All this is making me want to try Collinite.

Loving the hood shots.

Absolutely top notch, especially the bumpers! Even though they don't match the rest of the car, they are a known weak spot. Most people can't even get the oxidation off.

Oxidized and faded Red always shows so well after restoration. Wonderful results...ditto on the pic of the owners face. They must be happy with the results.

Great Job !

WOW!! That is one of the amazing transformations of the year! WOW!!!!!

What is your wetsanding process, was it difficult?

Extreme Detail Winner !!!

Awesome work and documentation. That is VERY impressive.

I thought about entering it into this month's detail contest but there were two red miata's in last month's competition as well.

Well it my first attepmt to wetsand. I soaked 2000 grit sand paper in a bucket of carwash soap for at least 20 minutes prior. Took the sand paper and placed on a 3M Sanding block. "pulled" the block against the paint towards me in a single direction using almost no pressure. Kept the area wet with a bottle of car wash and water in a spray bottle. Kept checking my work making sure I wasnt going too deep. Then after I felt that I had removed the defect as much as I could. I buffed the area to remove the sanding haze.

Amazing work, the hoods pic's are very, very impressive. An extreme detail winner, you have my vote!
