1986 Vette – Indy Pace Car. 12K on the clock.

This weekend we were in Ohio to celebrate my wife’s B-day and her parents 50th anniversary. I decided to pack my PC and work on my mother-in-laws Vette. It hasn’t EVER been polished and needed some attention.

Process used:

Wash: EO

Clay: Optimum

Wheels/Tires: A2Z, BnB, PwC

Paint: Optimum Compound & a Meg’s burgundy pad @ 5.5. I could not believe how flawless this product polished out. You could probably go straight to a sealer/wax –no kidding!

FPII & a polishing pad.

EX x 2 (12 hours between coats & used a MF bonnet on the PC to remove)

Wow.....Amazing job (as usual)...That car looks awesome....Perfect condition for an 86. You did it proud for sure.

Can I ask how you like the OP Compound? I saw Patrick did a small write up on it and thought it was great but could stand a little more cut. I love the OCP, and Im ordering some OPC along with Powergloss, cant wait to try it.

If you have any interior shots, Id love to see one of those too!

Your mother in laws?? Good for her! My mother in law drives

1) Me Crazy

2) The motorized wheel chair at Costco...And I refuse to detail that!

:lol ...great job!

Thanks everyone. Here are a few replies:

Setec Astronomy: That's my wife on her 40th B-day, and my son on the passenger side. They made an early morning Starbucks run in the Vette. She'd be pi$$ed if she saw that pic on the net because it was before the typical 2 hour primp session in front of the bathroom mirror :) (LOL).

Craigster: I took several interior shots, but they all turned out crappy. Here's one, but it's pretty blurry. My camera skills suck! I shampooed the carpet & mats, PwC on the door jams and Woolite & water on the dash (mother-in-law does not like any sheen on the dash so I just cleaned it).

Optimum Compound is the most effective swirl/scratch remover that I've EVER used via PC. I'm really not a big fan of Optimum Polish on the PC (but LOVE it on the rotary or cyclo). The compound has the same characteristics as the polish. It's no where near Power Gloss or SSR3 in terms of being abrasive and did not leave much hazing or micromarring (very minor). I haven't spent enough time with it on the rotary to offer up many comments at this point. I'll say this much, I've corrected defects with the compound that would typically require my cyclo or rotary to remove. PC owners are going to love this product.

Sean - The trip was fantastic! I'm bummed that I missed out on the park gathering last Saturday. Steve said it was a great time and mentioned that Liz was shocked that no one broke out any detailing equipment :) I thought of you when I saw this parked in front of the Ruth Chris Steakhouse in Columbus Ohio. I didn't want to take a sun shot, because it was COVERED in swirls -almost ruined my appetite!

Not true..

All Vert 86s were pace cars..

As indicated here:

1986 was the second opportunity for Corvette to provide the Official Pace Car for the Indianapolis 500, where the car was driven by famous test pilot Chuck Yeager. Chevrolet was proud because they did not need to make any modifications to their car for this task. This meant that all 7,315 convertibles, no matter what their specification or color scheme, are considered Pace Car replicas. It was also the first convertible Corvette since 1975.

Great job! That car is in awesome shape for that age! :xyxthumbs

Very nice! The paint looks terrific! :)

I agree about the compound, the finish it leaves is nearly as good as the polish.

I used to regularly clean a '96 pace car (the purple over white version). The C4s were nicer cars than they are given credit for.

Schweet :xyxthumbs

Great work, very wet looking finish.

The Compound is not as aggressive as PG, especially not SSR3, and many seem to desire it to have more cutting power. David is aware of that and "might" (i use that word with caution) tweak the compound a tad.

I just got another "sealant" sample today so I hope to give it a try tomorrow on something...maybe one of those COSTCO wheelchair carts :LOLOL

Again, great work mgm!

Thanks for the kind words everyone!

Aurora40 - It's an Indy car. The decals are tucked away above the garage, and there is an emblem on the dash. My understanding is that the Indy pace cars were the only ones that you could get in red on red and as a convertible

Anthony - I agree that the cut is no where near PG, but it's an awesome swirl/scratch remover on light to moderate defects. David might want to consider keeping this formula around as a DA polish/scratch remover. It's excellent IMO -and 10 times easier to remove defects via the PC as compared to the polish. I have a Ford F250 (black) coming up this weekend and plan to try in using the cyclo and dewalt. This detail earned me a Metabo and I can't wait to get it in my hands!!!

Here's one last shot....

I almost forgot..... Poorboys has a new leather cleaner/conditioner in development. I used it on the seats & door/window seals. It does a very good job of cleaning & conditioning leather & weather strips. It looks to be another hit from the poorboys line up.

This is not the case. You could also purchase the bright red (RPO L,732) in Medium Grey Met, White, Bright Red, and Silver/Grey)which was only avail in a coupe.

Holy smokes! You know your stuff on the corvette. I didn't mean to imply or pass along bad info.
