1984 Mercedes Benz 300D v. oxidation vs Optimum G-P-S

1984 Mercedes Benz 300D, owner contacted me about having it cleaned up for sale. He'd had it detailed about 6 months ago and was not at all happy about how the car turned out. The horizontal surfaces were oxidized and apparently they didn't do much to alleviate the dullness. Paint also had overspray, it felt really gritty while washing. Interior was in really good condition (car only has 87k miles on it) so nothing to do there other than a quick vacuum and wipe-down.

Had to do all the work in their garage, the car hasn't been driven much and the battery was dead, combined with dead batteries in my digital camera meant I took the pictures with my cellphone so picture quality is so-so.

Since the car needed really heavy claying, to stay in budget I wanted to see if the great results I got on a single stage white Accord with Optimum G-P-S would also apply to this Mercedes. Again, I was blown away at how quickly G-P-S goes through oxidized paint! It even removed the water spots on the chrome strip that runs along the top of the front bumper.

Far side is polished, near side is not

Both sides polished

After

The owner was so impressed with the transformation he had his family come out and look at it! :)

Full Process:

ONR wash

Optimum Opti-Clay using ONR Wash and Wax @ 32:1 as clay lube

Optimum G-P-S using an Optimum MF cutting pad and my Rupes 21 DA polisher

Armor All on tires/wheel wells

Again, I apologize for the picture quality, combination of a cell phone camera and blah lighting

Owner was thrilled, had the whole family come out to see the car. Start to finish with my son and I working, about 2 1/2 hours.

With ONR, I can get the wheels/wheel wells done (cleaned and dressed) while my son vacuums, then he starts washing/claying and I can follow around with the buffer, then he follows around with whatever we are sealing the paint with. As far as number of cars a day, depends on what we are going. We can do three basic (1 polishing step) details in 1 day if they are all at the same location. Paint correction though, it takes time.

SS jobs are always cool! GPS still amazes me on what it can do! Half of which it is not supposed to! Nice to see these older cars still living the good life!

IMO, if you can only have one AIO, it has to be G-P-S. :)
