Well this car takes the cake for most valuable car I have ever detailed!!
The car is a 1951 Ferrari 212 Export. From what I understand only 25 were made between 1951 and 1953. This one is very rare considering it was owned by Michael Hawthorn (Famous driver for the Ferrari Race Team in the 50’s). The car was brought over from England about 5 years ago and completely restored. At that time it scored a 97.5/100 at 2003 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance. The car is estimated to be worth anywhere from $1.1 – $1.5 million and increasing!
I arrived and washed the car. It was cloudy all day so the paint looked really good. Then after washing, the car was pulled in the garage and my lights were turned on. Ouch…the car was riddled with light scratches, swirls, hazing, and horrible buffer swirls. Looks like the last detailer used a wool pad with sand as polish. The pics don’t really do the actual swirls justice. The swirls and even the buffer swirls seemed to be DEEP!
The owner wanted a good clean-up and deferred to my judgment on the detailing. I knew perfection was out of the question especially with the time allotted. The car will be driven here and there with no real plans to “show it. So I decided to play it safe and not go for perfection. I go back in 2 days to finish the roof and trunk, inside and outside. I purposely didn’t take any pics of the car in its entirety to tease you all lol.
The car is SINGLE STAGE paint. Even though it was painted 5 years ago, they apparently went with single stage. The owner who has it now bought it after it was restored. Keep in mind that this car is a real bright light blue (aqua blue) and swirls don’t show too well on camera.
Process:
Wash and Clay
Hi-Temp EC/Orange Cut Pad/1500rpms x2 I did light passes instead of pressured ones to reduce amount of paint reduction.
Menz IP and Menz 106ff (50/50)/white polish pad/1500rpms
Menz 106FF/blue finesse pad/1500->1000rpms
No wax yet, and other stuff since I’m not finish.
