12 year old paint...Heres my attack plan...

I have a 92 mustang GT. It has red paint, which has seen better days. It has been ungaraged for about 3 years and I think its time to revive the paint. I am including a pic of the best shine I can get out of it now (which is a combination of waxes that would make some of you cringe...but I have tried almost everything i could think of inlcluding zaino). The problem I have is all I have been doing is covering up the oxidation, and at extreme angles it can still be seen in direct sunlight. I also have minor swirl marks. Here is my attack plan:

PC 7424

Clay

Menzerna IP w/ yellow pad

Menzerna FP w/ white pad

S100 w/ gray pad

I will be using all Microfiber towels. And probably gold class wash.

Any sugesstions would be welcome.

I'm still not up to speed with this Menzerna stuff :p but it sounds good from what I can tell. You might want to just use the S100 by hand though, as doing it by PC will hardly be any faster, if at all. Actually removing the oxidation is a far better plan (especially on single stage paint) than trying to cover it up or hide it. Red really looks terrible when the oxidation shows through again. Good luck, and nice pic! :)

I've been dying to try the Menzerna IP and FP as I've heard nothing but great things about them. Your plan sounds like you've done your homework. :up

Grab yourself a six pack (twelve pack optional) and have at it. BUT, don't forget to post pics when your done. I'd like to see the before and after pics.

Maybe DACP on the more scratched/swirled areas before M's IP/FP.

Try this - do whole vehicle with MIP. Drive over to local super market at night and look for scratches under the lights. Mark remaining scratched/swilred areas with those easy-peel sticky colored circles you can get at an office supply place. Hit those areas with DACP & MIP and repeat. When no scratches/swirls are visible, hit it with MFP.

Just a thought...

I thought IP is more aggressive than DACP?

On my 85 Capri RS I attacked it with 2500 grit wet sand, then clay then finesse it then polish then cleaner wax and finally carnuba wax. I do not know if you need to color sand but it is an option. Just keep the pressure extremely light, and the surface nice and wet. Rinse the sand paper often and change it quite often as well.

I would attack it with your initial plan, if that still yeilds oxidation showing up in short order, you may want to research then attemp a color sand. You could start in an inconspicous spot first to see what it yeilds.

Good luck, I like the way my paint now cleans up. I still get some oxidation coming off but no where near as much as it was. I guess one day I will have to repaint. :)
