06 Black Cayenne...need polish/pad advice

I'm a DIYer. My black Porsche Cayenne has holograms and swirls from past polishing with a rotary by others. I did limited application of Meguiar's Scratch-X on the heavier swirls followed with a full polish with 1Z Paint Polish with Megs yellow pads and 1Z Glanz Wax with Megs white pads. The overall finish was much improved by the Paint Polish but there was little improvement in the swirls and areas with heavy holograms by the Megs Scratch-X, which I don't think is intended for use with a DA and was probably a mistake, but I had it on the shelf. What would you recommend for getting rid of the swirls. I like Einzett products because they come in .5 L and leave little residue for wipe-down. I'm thinking 1Z Extra scratch remover with a more aggressive pad but would welcome suggestions. Are the cheap paint thickness gauges on ebay worth buying to avoid going too far?

Hi, what kind of polisher are you using? Also Scratch X I don't think was meant for a polisher. For over the counter stuff you might want to try Ultimate compound and polish with a microfiber cutting disc then follow it with megs white pad and Ultimate polish. This is if your using a D/A. I've used this combo a few times and it does really well. Hope this helps!

I use a DA. Yeah, I agree on the Scratch-X, but I live in an isolated small town and it was either that or paste compound after I began the project and saw that the 1Z polish wasn't getting the heavy swirls. This time I want to be prepared with more choices on my shelf. I'd like to try a lot of polishes but at $30-$40 for a full liter, experimenting with the premium stuff is expensive.

What kind of speed are you running your DA at and how much pressure are you putting on the pad, and lastly how big is your pad ??
If you are using 6" or bigger, you will not get as much rotation out of your machine, and you need pressure, speed and rotation, to break down the product through the clean, correct, polish, and finish stages...

If I was doing another Cayenne and I only had a dang DA to do it, I would be running it full speed with as much pressure as possible to correct that pretty hard paint..

Certainly your choice of product you use and pads will affect all of this...

I have lots of Einszett compound samples from when they used to send you a sample product when you bought something from them, but I never really got into using any of their compounds..
I will do some research and see what I can find out about them and let you know..

My good friend Joe Torbati - Jsmooth - has also given you perfect advice.. Just remember that if you go to microfiber discs, they require much more maintenance and cleaning while in use... No doubt, that microfiber is fast, but you need lots of them, they heat up quickly, and need to be tended to a lot more than a bunch of foam pads...

The last Porsche Cayenne I Detailed was Lapis Blue a stunning color, and very scratched..

I used my Rotary at no more than 1000-1200 rpm, about 20lbs pressure, and Sonax Perfect Finish, with Lake Country Hydro-Shred Cyan Pads in the 5-1/4" size or so...

Was a lot of work but it came out stunningly clear, glossy, no swirl marks or holograms...

When the sun hits Porsche Lapis Blue, there is nothing that looks better... :)

Good luck with your project !

You have been given great advice from both Joe and Dan. I agree with the Ultimate Compound and Polish if you are looking for something that you can find local. Most Walmarts carry both of these. If you prefer to use standard type flat pads then I would recommend the Hydrotech Cyan Pad with the UC and then switch to the Hydrotech Crimson Pad with the UP. I have had pretty good success with this combo. The Hydrotech Cyan Pad has some pretty good cutting ability and creates very little marring or hazing.

I can speak from experience that UC and UP work great on Porsche paint. To step it up a notch, Menzerna 2500 and 4000 are winners. For less money, but what a shine, Poorboy's Professional Polish and Pro 2 are great. Things I've tried that did NOT work, well, pm me.

Thanks, guys. Great info and suggestions. I'll probably stay with flat pads but go to Megs UC or Menzerna IP 2000 ($$$!!) and finish with the 1Z PP and Glanz Wax that I have on hand. Should I have some Menzerna 1500 on hand for heavy swirls or is it too aggressive for an amateur? I want to be conservative and not go thru the CC. Is the Menzerna 2000 really worth 2-3X the price of Megs UC.

I doubt you need 1500 unless she's all jacked up. Menzerna is worth every penny, but it not a linear scale. Just for sake of reference, lets say Menz might be 33% better than Megs, but that extra third is gonna cost you 2.5x the Megs bottle. Same with every endevour.

I think you'll be happy with UC, especially if you follow it with a good polish. Also note that UP is just a more user friendly version of Meg's professional M105 which legions swear by even if they have access to Menz.

Good points; I can grab a bottle of UC at O'Reilly's and try it before sending off my order to Autopia. I can always add the Menz 2000 if I don't like the UC outcome. The Cayenne isn't really bad so I probably don't need the 1500.
