'05 BMW Z4 + sap removal (56k no)

Sunday I received this 2005 Z4 to detail inside and out. The owner had recently purchased the car about 2 months ago. The previous owner worked at a restaurant and the drivers side carpets and door were nasty. The previous owner also let tree sap get on the paint and soft top and never bothered to remove it. It only had 10,000 on it but was a fight until the end. The drivers door and rear quarter panel had been repainted and there were defects under the clear I couldn't remove. There were also two deep scratches the dealer put in the trunklid Friday. They need paint to fix them.

I gave the Z4 an ONR wash and proceeded to remove the sap from the paint, soft top, weather stripping, etc. Then I clayed with clay magic using ONR (QD ratio) as lube.

Polishing process:

EC/OP yellow LC @1500-1700

OP white LC @1100-1500

Jeff Werkstatts CJ x 2

Tires received Megs Nxt tech protectant

Wells received Long Haul tire sealant

Exhaust tips got Mothers aluminum polish by hand

Debadged the "Z4" and "2.5i" emblems per owners request

Interior:

Vac

Vroom APC wipe down all surfaces (except leather), protected with 303

Shampoo and folex to clean carpets

Leather was wiped down with water/woolite mix and protected with 303

IG on glass

This is what happens to your paint in sap sits on it too long. It creates a crater that is too deep to polish out fully.

I tried everything I had and I couldn't completely remove the door scuff

Nasty grease/grime wear spot. Folex got 95% of it out.

I didn't get any pictures of the top but the sap was removed from it.

Questions or comments?

How'd you tackle the sap? I think sap is one of the worst parts of detailing. That and overspray. The little bimmer looks awesome.

Denatured alcohol did the trick. It was 90 in my garage so it made the sap removal much easier than usual. I also used clay to remove any residue left behind.

Nice trun around:cool:

How did you make out with that deep sratch?

Thanks.

I couldn't do anything with it. It is through the paint. The dealer is going to have to repaint it for him.

Hard work it looked like! The car looks much better debadged.

I thought it would have been easy, but I was wrong as usual. :wall

I was excited when the owner asked me to debadge it. I always debadge my own vehicles. It makes them look better and is so much easier to wash, dry, polish, etc.

I'll never understand why people tear up nice cars like that. :nixweiss

Excellent improvement in all areas! Between your hard work and (hopefully!) a new owner who will take better care of the car, it ought to have a much easier life now. :)

BTW, a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser does an amazing job on door scuffing.

Scott, I usually use one but was all out, so I used an old yellow foam pad and it still wouldn't come off 100%.

Thanks for the compliments.

I'm blown away to see a Z4 looking that bad at that age and mileage. And why would someone like that, who doesn't take care of his cars, get a biege interior?

Good work on it though. I'm with Scott about the Magic Eraser - other Z4 owners swear by them as well. And they do look much better de-badged - I did my own Z4 a couple weeks back.
