02 Gold Z28

My neighbor has seen me working on other cars and his wife hired me to clean up his 10 year old Z28. It's seen better days.

She opted for the basic in/out detail, 1-step polishing option. I ended up spending too much time on it, but it turned out pretty well. Still plenty of swirls and marring, but that's the trade-off. I knew the GM clear would be tough.

I got the chance to try out some Optimum goodies and MF pads, and I've got to say I'm quite happy with all of it.

Wash:

Armor All Foaming Wash w/ONR added

Wheels:

Mother's Wheel &Tire Cleaner (I need something better!)

Poli-Seal w/5" MF Cutting

OOS (test panels, layered over OCW on fender and hood)

Thanks for looking!

Thanks, Brad. He's in love with his car and this just made him that much happier.

Now if I could control myself and manage to get a "one step" done in a timely fashion... Or just estimate the work required a little better...

Awesome work! I still love 4th-gen Camaros. :goodjob

Just to point out though, there's no way that is a 2002. Pewter Metallic was not available that year, and the plate on the dash would say "35th Anniversary" on it instead of just "Camaro." :nerd:

Ah, I didn't ask exactly. They said it's 10 years old. Could be an 01.

Thanks to you and someidiot :)

As an aside, what I love about doing cars in the neighborhood is the chance to see them looking great for a while. On the other hand, some people just don't take care of them and that's terribly frustrating to see :)

Charlie, maybe you could answer this question -- the rollbar type part of the roof, is that actually painted? It seemed almost like a vinyl wrap or plastic-covered. Either way, correction was relatively easy. Thanks.

That's always the problem when doing cars for friends/family...you always end up putting in way more time than you should. How many hours did you spend on this one?

Did the Poli-Seal offer any noticeable cut/correction on the MF cutting pad?

I ended up with double the time I estimated on this one. In part because it was so dirty. A nice decon wash probably would have helped. Also, an acid-based wheel cleaner would have cut that cleaning time in half, at least (an hour on the wheels). Total was around 8 hours, with a break for lunch and a couple stops to chat.

The Poli-Seal/MF combo did do a little correction, but not what I would have gone for if I were actually trying to do correction. I would expect the same out of any cutting pad and AIO, though.

Yeah, it is painted; however the substrate material is a plastic/acrylic that is fairly thin and held on with adhesive. On some cars you'll see it actually start to bubble up or wrinkle pretty badly. At one time GM had a service bulletin out about that exact issue and did a fairly involved warranty repair procedure on them. A buddy of mine had a '99 hardtop which had that start to happen, and just about a week ago I worked on an '02 hardtop which was doing the same thing.

Nope, they're definitely not in great shape. I had intended to hit them with a 4" pad and some heavy polish, then Meg's #17 and #10, finish with Plexus, but time was against me. The owner didn't mind at all, didn't even think they were a problem :o
