'01 A4, '02 9-5 Aero (56k warn)

The Audi owner found my information on Autopia after he was sent here from Audiworld. He contacted me to fix what a detail shop had done to his A4. He asked me to make his not so brillant black paint brillant once more. The front bumper and driver side fender had just been repainted due to a minor accident and only were polished with FPII, no wax, or sealant.



Process:

Nxt wash

Claymagic the lower panels

EC/OP via yellow LC @1500-1900

FPII via white LC @1100-1200

JW AJ first time I used it, what a PITA to remove!



Wheels

WB and Powerpuff cup scrubber

Soap and water with Megs spoke brush and MF

Tires/wells EO A2Z with various brushes then protected with Nxt Tech Protectant

Next up the Saab. Process was the same (used OP instead of FPII) as the A4 but it took me FOR EV VER! Not many pics b/c it was taking waaaaaaaay too long and I couldn't get the paint as nice as I would have liked since it had very deep marring. The marring was most likely from the brush he was using to wash his car with. I educated him on proper care and gave him links to products that won't marr his paint so much. I decided to not go for more cutting passes since he keeps his cars for a long time (last car was 9 years) and EC/OP via yellow LC is fairly aggressive. I figured if it was still there after that then it was deeper than was safe to remove.

It looked 100% better but I was dissappointed with the results.
 
Nice job as always. Big difference on the Saab even though you didn't get it the way you wanted. Let's hope the owner maintains it.



Curious about the Audi. I saw that you taped around the B-pillars. Did you polish them also?
 
Hey Mark, Yes I polished around the B pillars. They were swirled and needed it. Are they body color on your car or just black plastic. I couldn't tell on this car.



Thanks for the kind words on the Saab. I'm still bummed, but it did look 100% better. It just wasn't 100% to autopian standards.

Nice job on both cars! Was the paint on the Saab hard? I did a similar car and even with wool pad and powergloss I didn´t get all of the swirls out.
 
Nice work on the A4. As far as the 9-5 goes I bet it still looks perfect in the sun. Its fun to get every last swirl out for C and B's but the fact is the owner will put twice that amount of swirls the first time they wash it. Nice work!

On my car, the pillars are black, just like the car you did. It's not plastic.



I got my supplies. PC with a yellow, 2 orange, 2 white, 2 grey pads, OC, OP, KSG. I just put an offer in on a townhouse with a garage. So hopefully I won't need your garage ;)
 
I'm suprised you found AJ difficult to remove. I've found it extremely easy to remove. Were you layering it on really heavily? How long were you leaving it before you buffed it out?

Yes the paint did seem pretty hard. Except the hood which had been repainted. It cleaned up much better but it also was not as bad as the rest.





cj99si - You're right. It's not always possible to remove everything. The owner was very happy and the car looked better than most cars on the road so I guess I should be happy. Thanks for the compliments.



Mark - Goodluck on the house hunt. I hope you do get one soon so your car can stay protected. If you need help detailing or want tips let me know as always.



maesal - I think it basically is KSG. I had a difficult time with it but I have discusssed with some others and have different methods to try out.



Titania - I am applying it very thin but I think it might still be a little too thick, judging by how watery it is. I always apply products so you can barely see them. On the Audi I spread over the whole car then went to buff and the haze would come off but it left behind streaks. I could only get them off with the AG. On the Saab I tried WOWO on the trunk lid and it worked well but then I tried on the doors and it still was streaking so I used some AG and went panel by panel. Then I decided that was taking too long and I spread the rest of the car and then used AG again. If I didn't use AG I could buff the haze off but not the streaking. I was told using Prime or AIO as a base helps prevent this.

I added a spray trigger, and I use about a squirt of AJ per body panel...so not much. I used it to help in buffing out Prime, so that may have made a difference. Not that the Prime was tough to buff out, but it saved me a step in not having to buff out the Prime before applying AJ. I didn't have any issues with streaking. I would buff out as soon as I finished applying AJ to the body panel, barely giving it time to dry. Sounds like you're doing things right, so maybe it is streaking due to the base coat.
 
No wonder you had a problem buffing AJ off. It is a WOWO product. Put it on thin on 1/2 a panel, take the applicator, and without adding more product, basically buff the residue off with the applicator. Then take an MF and do a final buff. Done right, AJ is VERY easy.

Beat me to it. Once you use that method, it is one of the easiest LSPs to use.



Excellent job on the details-believe me, I know first hand how tough both Audis and Snobs...I mean Saab's can be to buff out. Looks like you pulled it off very well! :)

I understand this but I followed the primary directions on the bottle. It said to spread a thin coat, let haze and buff off. If it is a WOWO it should say that only. It does have the alt. directions for spray application which basically says to WOWO. Thanks for the tips. Now I know better and will see if I can master application.
