PC vs. Oribital (aka, is ddetail wrong?)

So this unnamed member said he/she prefers the PC--kicks the Rotary's butt. I've only ever used a Rotary, a DeWalt currently. The PC is on sale locally with a pad here. I don't really have the cash, but do I have a need for a PC when I'm doing okay on a rotary?

Should I be in a different line of work?

It's been a busy week or so, but the last couple of days at the detail shop have been slow. Except for a guy who brought in his golf clubs to ask if I could buff and compound them to get dimple marks and grass stains off. Worked pretty good. Then another guy at the nearby furniture store brought...

    A Beautiful After

So this is a 1977 Triumph Spitfire 1500, all original paint. Totally oxidized rust coloured paint, worst I've seen outside of red. The pearl white hard top wasn't too bad, just dirty and stained, and came out fantastic. The chrome is awful, and I'm still looking for a way to fix it. Crappy...

    Question on Meg's mild abrasive

I am in the middle of a job and my SSR1 has still not arrived. I've been using a fairly heavy cut system and need a milder non-silicone polish to follow up. There isn't much available locally, if I can I'll get Farecla G10, which is fantastic, but hard to find. I can get Meguiar's Cleaner Wax...

    77 Triumph Spitfire 1500 questions

A customer has come to me with a 77 Spitfire 1500 in pretty poor shape. It is a rust colour--actually not quite rust since there is actual rust on it. There are 7 or 8 small dents throughout, light oxidization, degraded chrome, and some worn paint and stone chips. It has probably not had a good...

    Engine Disaster

So, I've probably done 40-50 engines in the last 6 months. No real problems. Had a guy come in with a 97 Protege, just bought it, and a filthy engine. I taped off the distributer cap and went to town like normal. The car started okay, but was sluggish. After running it for a coupla minutes at...

A strange end to a strange week (you think you've seen overspray?!)

So I started the week off with a Maxima that had dissappearing paint--paint that washed off, obviously recent, uncured touch ups. Then I had the guy with "no clearcoat". On Friday morning, a man came in looking quite sheepish in little, aqua-green domestic sedan. The hood looks awful. He comes...

    Would you sell?

I'm curious, for those in the pro detailing racket, who would sell if you were approached? I've been going a couple months, and have had a possible interested investor, and every other detailing group in town has been either bought or sold.

    California Water Blade

Has anyone used this? Is it useful, cost effective? How does it work with contours? Does it leave a rubber residue behind?

    Has anyone ever encountered this?

A guy called with a 98 Toyota 4-Runner, White, one owner. It is completely dull, so he took it to a local shine place, and they couldn't get it shiny. Then he took it to the Toyota dealership, and they tried stuff, but no go. They said, "your clear coat has worn off". What the? First, I've...

    Trying NXT

For those who've used it, does it respond well to a polisher (Makita), or you all applying by hand? How long is it taking you who apply it? About the same as a paste wax? And how much of the can of paste does a vehicle take?

    Touch up paint then LSP

I'm not a big fan of touch up paints, but there is a place for them. Most touch up, unless you spend $20+ on the bomb with hardener or that pen I hate with "clear", is uncured paint. If I am going to touch up AND polish or wax, I assume I do the touch up, let it dry, then do the LSP. Is that right?

Terminology Question: Spider-Webbing and Swirl Marks

I'm having trouble understanding some of the shop talk here. It is one thing to keep up with all the acronyms, acrostics, and shortcuts, but I am confused about the way people speak on this point. The way people I know personally in detailing talk, we have two terms: swirl marks and spider...

What can be done with a Motor Home?

Had a guy call. He has a 1999 Ford Fleetwood Storm, white motor home. The coloured decal design is good on one side, but has faded on the other. Besides telling him "park a different way, it'll even out," can anything be done to brighten up the large decals to bring the colour out? Also, has...

4 Polishes Compared (Prestone, Turtle, The Treatment, a Commercial grade)

Although this is not an "apples and apples" test, since there are polishes, liquid waxes, and paste waxes, this is an example of three off-the-shelf products with a cheap commercial polish as the base line. If someone walked into my local auto supply store, these are 3 products they might look...

What PSI is best for washing?

I'm currently using a cheap, consumer 1600 PSI Simoniz washer (don't know the American brand name). It is a stop gap solution. As it is, I hardly ever get 1600 PSI, so I'm not sure what it can do in most situations. So as I look down the road to a commercial grade washer for wheels, washing...

Doubt there are a lot of newbies from PEI

Hello all. I'm now located in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. For those who don't know, PEI is a province (like a state, but more sophisticated!) of Canada. I bought the rights for PEI and opened up my own shop back where I grew up. Nice to join the community.

Looking for the Best Silicone, Wax, and Grease Remover

Hello all, I'm a newbie. Hope this is the right forum, if not, mods please move it. We developed a paint renewal system in Vancouver, BC and I've moved to the East to open a dealership there. We have different suppliers and supplies. I need a product that will remove ALL silicone, wax, and dirt...
