Are coatings really worth it, some (more) heretical ramblings....

So my new car fever hit again like it usually does every spring (and fall). I found myself looking at some used cars and it seems that coatings are making their way to Carfax reports. I know its a small sample, and of course not even close to a controlled environment, but could I tell any of them have been coated? NOPE. I couldn't help but think these people spent north of $500 maybe even $1k+ on getting their cars coated. ROI, probably pretty close to zero.

I know from first hand experience from over a decade of using coatings, they help, but the hype is so high. While I never expereienced the car that stays spotless due to a coating, I do think they save me from claying as much as I used to. Would I even tell a family member that it is money well spent on their car, absolutely NOT! Nothing keeps paint looking nice like regular washes.

Sharpen those keyboards and let me have it, prove me wrong!

I think it's mostly just one of those dealer upsells that people should avoid, for "regular" car owners.

As I have said before, I've been on detailing forums for 20+ years now, and although everything has changed, nothing has changed. We 1% or .1% of car owners will endlessly obsess over our processes and products, no matter how much the bar moves. So a coating is just our LSP of today for us to argue over.

Setec, that’s a great perspective. And just like decades ago, dealers were pushing sealants, now it’s coatings. It really makes me sick how much crap the dealers tack onto the price of a car. They do their best to scare people into spending thousands for nothing.

Now I’m on the fence with my new car… use up the new Cerakote Pro or just go with DG [emoji[emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3]][emoji[emoji3]]][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3]]][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3]][emoji[emoji3]]][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3]]][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3]]][emoji[emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3]][emoji[emoji3]]][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3]]][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3]][emoji[emoji3]]][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3]]][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3]]]][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3][emoji[emoji[emoji3]][emoji3]][emoji3]] until I have time to properly polish it….

Dan, are you going to repeat what you posted? All I see is a zillion (emoji) words with a number in blue next to them.... Thanks...

I just typed Duragloss one zero five and that's what came up. It wasn't anything long.

But after thinking about it I'm going to use TW One and Done on a polishing pad and then do a quick IPA wipe. Follow that with Cerakote Pro.
