Approximately how many car washes (say a regular sized sedan?) And how do you know if you're using too much?

I'm really new to all this car detailing stuff. I have a 1991 Lexus LS400 (dark emerald green or something) that my parents handed down to me. They didn't really care about their cars, so it wasn't well maintenced or taken care of in general. There are a lot of scratches and swirls and stuff...
