Clay Bar Question

Livin' the good life
I washed my girl friend's car a couple days ago & I need the clay bar (ClayMagic) to clean some tree sap off the roof & deck lid. I used the soapy water (NXT) as a lubricant & both surfaces cleaned up quite nicely.

I didn't intend to clay the whole car & I didn't feel like walking back to the garage to put away the clay so I dropped it in the pail of soapy water ....... and forgot about it.

Next day I noticed the empty clay container on the work bench and I retrieved the clay bar from the wash pail. It had gotten kind of weird looking, not mushy or anything but it was light blue bordering on almost white but the surface was clean. I mean completely clean and not a smudge or mark on the surface.

I left it out to dry or whatever it was going to do, it could be ruined for all I know. After about a day it was back to the original ClayMagic blue color & it was really tacky, maybe tackier than when new.

Tried it with some lube & it's 100% good to go. No smearing, no residue, it's looks almost like new and the surface of the clay is clean.

Any one else ever notice this?

Could the NXT soap have that much cleaning ability that it cleaned the surface of the clay bar in an unagitated (dormant) pail of water?

Hmmm usually you don't want certain soaps to saturate the clay bar. If the clay bar does absorb to much it might crumble. Not quite sure how the clay bar will react, but you can cut off the bordering and you should be fine. Just watch out next time to see any results.

You just cleaned the surface of the clay. The whole point of clay is to pull the particles inside. Everytime you fold the clay it is moving the particles around. No soap is going to clean the whole bar just by soaking in it. I can't really tell you what happened, but I can tell you that the clay is not entirely "clean".

I don't understand why the clay didn't saturate. I've had clay saturate with lube just in the process of using it. Leaving a chunk in a bucket of water for several hours should have soaked it clear through. Kind of interesting.....

I editted my original post 'cause, as you pointed out, I was referring to the surface of the clay and not the entire clay bar.

I'm not promoting this as a "how to clean clay" thread I just thought it was an odd result. It's nothing I plan to do on a regular basis but it's interesting that the surface looks so clean & free of impurities.

The surface of the clay can be cleaned just by getting it wet and drying it off again. Its no trick to make the surface look clean. The thing that I'm still amazed about is that the clay didn't disintegrate in the water.
