Water spots, DIY or let pro's tackle it.

Hello everyone

Excuse me if you have read this in the welcome section but I was informed there may be more replies here.

Found this site out of necessity and from what I've been reading I couldn't be happier with the find. I wish my first thread could be a 'happier' one but this is not the case. Here's my dilemma: Bought a 2004 BMW M3 two months ago, Titanium silver in color. Went on a vacation and the car unknowingly was parked next to the resorts sprinkler system. Temperatures reached 35 degrees C and as a result have water spots that won't come off. I have tried water/vinegar mix, claying and a cleaner wax all of which seemed to reduce the spots but not totally eliminate them. They are smooth to the touch and therefore suspect etching. Because the car is silver, the spots are not noticeable unless viewed at the right angle under a fluorescent light; however, they still make me lose sleep at night.

My choices are: professional detailing or tackle it myself. From reading I believe I can handle the task and have decided on the following products: Porter Cable 7336, Mother's Clay Bar, Meg Medallion Paint cleaner or 3M Finesse It II, Klasse AIO and finally Klasse SG. Have read recently that Poorboy's products such as SSR 1 and 2, EX-P and Natty's wax are good alternatives, are these just alternatives or do the different options produce different results?

What should I do, let the pros handle it, leave it alone as it is not too visible or work carefully through this? I am not new to detailing but have never taken it this far; however, the satisfaction and gratification from a job well done is second to none for me.

Any input would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

BTW, thanks for the welcomes, first forum I've signed onto that is inviting rather than full of attitude.:beer

You have a tough call. Your money outlay for the equipment and waxes will alot. In fact it will probably cost you more for that then to have someone do it for you. But then you bring up a good point that the satisfaction and gratification of a job well done. Yea that is a tough call. If you do buy the equipment and products you will have if for the next time. I have used Meg's DACP for removing water spots and it worked well for me. I also don't think you can go wrong with Poorboy's products. By the way welcome to DC.

I've removed some bad water etchings with several passes of SSR2.5 with a polishing pad and some VERY bad water etchings with SSR3 and a cutting pad. All with my PC. The task would be much easier with a rotary but I don't have one.

Good luck! What you are trying to accomplish is not easy.

First welcome to the last web site you will ever call home
Second if you are willing to spend the money to get everything you need lets say around the ballpark of 300 bucks.PC , velcro back plate , Pads finishing polish and cutting pads medium and light , SSR1 SSR2.5, EX-P and Nattys thats my suggestion.
GOOD LUCK

SSR 3 (with steel wool) took out the nastiest water stains I have seen on my windows. Caked on for who knows how long (bought it recently used). With a polishing or cutting pad and SSR 3, I'm sure they will come out. Maybe even with SSR 2 or 2.5 if you don't want to jump in with both feet.

Cheapest short term solution is to pay a detailer to remove those. After that, you can do regular upkeep by hand. If you've got the detailing bug, you can spring for a PC along with the previously mentioned products.

PC7336 Finisse it II / AIO / SG or PC SSR 2.5 SSR1 to natty's/exp look around a little more

Ugg...got some today either from water + sun, or maybe from some dried in soap. Autoglyme polish, cleaner, and even claying not helping on the windows -- any suggestions?

The cars don't look good on the paint, either, but as long as it doesn't go through the acryllics I laid, I'm not worried. I plan on doing a final detailing in November -- would Klasse AIO or Poorboys PP take them off, since they're chemical cleaners?

the car i bought was sitting at a delear for 6 monhts outside. 6spd with navi accord in black is a rare car i guess. well i have lots of watermarks on the tops of the car.

i have done 3-4 passes with cutting pad with pc with 2.5 and most of them are still there. there not as noticable as before but i know where to look since i look at this car everyday. so that might have something to do with it.

if i really wanted to get them all out i would probley have to learn how to use a rotery porperly or even wetsanding.

but most people that look at my car dont even notice them one bit there in shock of how siney and mirror like my car is.

Since we're on the subject, what the heck actually causes the outline of the rain/water spotting? Is it mineral deposits in the water?

Asuming you have layers of protection, in what layer(s) are the water spots present? It's not in the paint or clearcoat, right? It's in one of the acryllic layers or wax layers, right?
