Nu Finish?

Nu Finish seems to get lots of digs as far as not being a quality product.
Just curious, what is so terrible about the stuff? Since I don't use it, I can't comment on it, but I'm sure some of you can.
The one thing I have heard about it is that it leaves white stains on trim, but lots of products do that.
It is a synthetic.
It is cheap.
It is readily available.
So, why is it so unpopular with the detailing crowd?

It says it can do 1 step / year. I think every detailer takes care of their car at least 1 step every DAY :lmfao

It's not too bad for the "once a year" detailer, but I've found (years ago, so it may be different now) that the paint seemed to fade or bleach out after a while. Granted, this was on a crappy re-paint, but since then, I've been trying other things. Also, it didn't bead for a year.

On a side note, I've read that the liquid version is better than the paste, and that Ron Ketcham (Auto Int) had something to do with the development of it, and said that it's fine for an otc product and that the abrasiveness/aggressiveness horror stories are overrated.

I still have a bottle of Nu-Finish on the shelf just in case I start geeking out and have to have a fix. I think it is a very good product. I also wonder about the bashing it seems to recieve some times. I do recall how difficult it seemed to be to work with (staining trim, hard to remove, etc) in my pre DC life. But since I have learned a lot more about working with products it seems easy to handle. It is much more difficult to remove from an oxidized surface. But that is also where it does the most good. It really doesn`t seem abrasive to me , but definitely has chemical cleaners. Definitely takes two coats for full benefit. I did a water tank in my yard a few months ago that is painted blue and is exposed 100% and had oxidized to a chalky look. Two coats of Nu-finish brought it back to life and it still looks great. But in a moment of weakness I gave it a coat of GC paste and it definitely improved the gloss. Meguiar`s Color X is probably a lot better product to use that can compare in price. But I have never used it, just going by reviews.

NuFinish is good, but Bigrons version is the ulitimate in car care products.

Seriosly though. I use NuFinish and I think its a nice product for a polymer sealant. It is slighly difficult to remove once applied but its value makes it a hard option to pass up. Try it side by side with a similar product, you might be impressed.

i dont have to say anything .. this product speaks for itself .. could be toxic though.. be sure to wear protection

If I remember correctly, Nu Finish was introduced to the market on an INFOMERCIAL! This was probably 15+ years ago, but the stigma associated with wonder products available for "the low price of $$$.... but wait!" might still be too much to overcome.

That's just a thought as to why so many don't trust it...

FYI, my dad has been using it for YEARS, and LOVES it! Personally, I won't let him get the product anywhere near my cars... but I don't really know why.

I used Nu Finish years ago on single stage paint and while it was harder to use than todays products, it did a pretty nice job. Of course it never did last a year!

I used NuFinish in the late 80's early 90's. I liked it but it could be a bear to get off.

LOL Will all of the closet NuFinish users please chime in.

IIRC NuFinish was one of the earlier products that could be used in the direct sun. You better believe I used it. It performed fine for me, following the directions of going back over the surface with a second coat. I never tried to test the 1 year longevity claim. I don't have much memory of it being hard to remove. I think I may still have a bottle somewhere on a shelf.

i really want to do a car with the stuff but i wouldnt tell the customer and that would be dishonest .. im going to do it one day maybe with the rotary or pc .. wouldnt it be funny if this stuff really kicked ass

Consumer Reports rated car waxes a couple of years ago. Nu Finish finished in first place, however, it was only rated against other brands available at auto parts stores etc. Consumer Reports is pretty reputable and their tests are scientific. Who knows, you could probably use it and no body would even know.

I have used Nu Finish in the past (before I learned how to really do things correctly). It is definately a pain to get off. The big problem I have has been the clear coat failure on two vehicles that I have used it on. This may be totally unrellated since both vehicles sat outside in the Texas sun and were not garaged. I am not sure if it was the bad Chrysler paint or the polish.

I think it's supposed to protect clearcoat not eat it. Saying this, my 92 Chevy van's clearcoat started peeling in about 4 yrs. I was using a boatload of NuFinish back then.
