Wax after new paint?

My friend is having his entire 2000 Nissan Maxima repainted and he was wondering how long before he can wax his car. I think it is waterbase paint.
thx!

Unless I'm mistaken water-based systems need less time to cure, unlike urethane or enamel systems which need anywhere from 30-60 days cure time. To be safe your frined should find out from the painter what exactly is on the panels, and subsequently how long before waxing.

In the meantime, you can put on a hand glaze such as 3m imperial hand glaze. This glaze allows the paint to properly cure, while leaving a nice finish. Also, it can be used regularly until you are ready to wax or seal.

I agree. the hand glaze is a good product. 3m has good afterpaint directions on thier site as well as on some paint shop safe products they sell. autobody supply stores will have them by the load. try it out .

p.s. this isnt a macco paint job is it ?

thanks guys. he's having the car painted at the Nissan dealership. Because he travels alot with his car, his front is chipped and so he decided to paint the entire car. Does anyone know what kind of paint Nissan uses? I thought it is waterbase. I also thought Japanese paint is thinner or does not use as many coats as American and European cars.

Nissan paint is notoriously thin :) my 02 maxima had chips down to the metal on the hood and sides (but then again so does my acura now)

My bodyshop uses DuPont waterbased paint, and they suggest 4-6 weeks. As a precaution, I would always ask the shop doing it.
