Scratches, Scuffs: Do Whole Car Or Not ?

If your car's finish is OK and you have a scratch, what's the best way to just work on the scratch and not re-do the whole car? My sister has a 12" scratch on her mininvan and asked me if I could get it out (with the help of this board!).

I will probably do her entire car soup-to-nuts once I am comfortable, but wanted to know if she had gotten the scratch AFTER a complete detailing, what are my options, other than doing complete multi-layered cleanings of the door and the entire car?

By PC or rotary, get some 4" pads and the appropriate backing plate. I routinely hunt for any micromarring and attack it with the 4" pads.

When the random scratch/scrape/marring occurs, I just polish the area affected as needed.
Same products, pads, and procedure I would use if I was going to do the entire vehicle, but I will do just the area/panel in question.
That would include scratch/swirl removal, paint cleaner/polish, and last step product. The paint correction would be with the PC, the polish and final product would probably be by hand.

Thanks guys...what's the downside to using the PC with the 5" plate and 7" pads (once I get 'em).

The Meg's pads I use are 6.5" and are used with the 5" backing plate.
The 7" pads will only be 1/4" bigger all the way around. It doesn't seem like that would be enough to cause a problem. Heck, I get mine more than 1/4" off center sometimes.
