Waxing an Honda Civic

Hello All,

Got a newbie questions. My wife's got a '94 Civic EX that is in desparate need of a wash an a wax. I went online and got can of 1Z Glanz Wax (http://www.autopia-carcare.com/1z-930206.html) for the deed. A couple of days later someone mentioned to me that its not a good idea to wax the Civic rather then to polish it. He person told me that wax will take off a small layer of the clearcoat and start to eat away at the paint if I will continue to use the wax. Is this true ? Will I horribly mess up the paint job with the wax ? Should I polish the car instead ? Thanks in advance...

Hi Vans;

Welcome to DC.

Your friend is not well informed.

For starters, you have a confusion in terms. Polish is abrasive and designed to remove, or "abraid" an extremely thin layer of paint from the surface of your vehicle. This process also removes surface contamination and can also repair some paint damage.

Wax IS NOT abrasive and will not harm your paint in any fashion, whatsoever. Period.

There are a number of things that you should be looking at to do a professional job on your car in addition to polishing and waxing (by the way, you polish first and wax second).

There is a thread on this site entitled (something like) "Detailing according to jngrbrdman" (I call him jingerbinger for his safety and to avoid confusion). Do a search using "Detailing according to*" and I am certain you will find it. It will tell you everything you need to know to make that Civic glow!

If you have any more questions, please ask them here. We have many experts who will be more than happy to assist you.

PS. Get new friends. The one who gave you the information on wax and polish is an idiot.

:yeah

You may also want to try and clay the car after you wash it. It is really simple to do and you will be able to feel and see the difference. Then follow with a polish or wax.

Oh, and welcome to the board. Many friendly people here to answer all your questions!!

Wow ! Thanks for all the great information and the warm welcome. I'm sure I'll have a pleasant stay on this board. If the weather permits I'll wax the car this weekend and I'll post before and after pictures. Thanks again ! :)

What your not being told is there is two type of clays for vehicles a mild version [dark colors] and a more aggressive for light colors of clay then followed by a good polish and protected by a sealant [EX,NXT ect..] or wax

My proven method of action for that either color would be:

Handwash and rinse
Handwash and clay [mild version] then rinse and dry
Color X remove with 100% cotton towel followed by a good MF Towel
NXT 2 coats waiting 30 min between each application removeing each application with a good MF towels

If you have a PC you would need w8006 for Color X and w9006 for NXT and the second coat by hand with a foam applicator

Welcome Vans :) Its hard for us to say what exactly you need to do to your wifes car but If a good "wash and wax" is needed, I'll bet a good claying and polish is needed too(we need pics)..

Since youve already purchased the glanz wax I would reccomend the 1Z Metallic Polish if her paint is in good condition.. And (from experience) use a super thin layer of the glanz wax... Trust me on this !! A little goes a looong way.
