More quantity, less quality??? help!

zesty-man

how do ya like it?
well, as my jounior year comes by, im looking to do some detailing for my friends over weekends. however, its dawned on me that some people want their cars done in 2-3 hours. usually, i like to take my time and really to a quality job, but from my understanding, i dont have that kinda time, and i certainly dont wanna keep my friends waiting. i mean, i still wanna do a great job, but i have to do a quality job, in quantity time, if you get what im saying. heres what im aiming for, is this an impossible goal???

in 2-3 hours (small coupe/sedan) i want to.......
wash
clay
remove paint defects
apply some kinda sealent
dress tires
rims
trim
glass
interior (vaccum only probably)
*possibly dress interior

my plan is, probably going with AIO followed by SG, or maybe PwC and EX-P, or something along those lines. im looking for products AND some tips that will save me time, but also produce the results.

how long do you guys usually spend on a detail? all in all, these guys are my friend and stuff, and for a 3 hour detail, ill probably end up charging them 60. theyre rich kids, after all, we go to private school (just that, im not rich)

Good luck trying to do all that in 2 to 3 hours. I would tell your friends........... "if you want it done right, it will take time"!

well, really, theyre teenagers like me, and theyre my friends, and all, so i really cut them some slack. i mean, i wouldnt wanna go 3 figures on them quite yet....... I NEED TO BE A GOOD FRIEND :)

also, about the time thing. i can adjust accordingly to what i have to do to fit in that time. basically, i know my friends are gonna want their cars done pretty fast.

I understand giving "special" pricing for friends, I do the same thing.

But your work is a reflection of you (no pun intended). You have to be satisfied with it.
If your friends give you greif about how long it's taking (which I doubt they will) let them know
you want to give them the best you can, and that takes time.
They will appreciate that (and hopefully tell others about you) :jump

Good Luck

Why not get your friends to help you out by doing things such as vaccuming. I know you want to do a quality job and they are friends, but with the time constraints you are suggesting, it might help you out if they acted as your assistant. Then, when you didn't charge them out the wazoo, you wouldn't feel so slighted. Just a thought!!

First off ...Id like to say don't ware your self out! Your still only in high school. Please Please Please don't rush the inevitable you have the rest of your life to work! (Im sure everyone here will agree with that) High School/College is where I know I had some of the best times of my life and it wasn't all that long ago either (im going on 6 out of high school/2 years out of college)Just make sure that your not missing out on all the fun while your working your butt off just so your friends rides look great! With that said!

Perhaps a good idea would be to split the Job in to a 2 day thing so that your not keeping their cars for an extended period of time. Exterior one day and interior the next time.

You could even say something like its 45-55 for the exterior and its 20-25 for the interior and when the bring it back for the interior tell them for an extra $10.00 you will do a quick exterior wash.

Sounds like a great idea to me. Especially if your friends happen to be female.

Zesty - I think your on a good track but think about it - If you do an awesome job on the rich kids car's - you might end up getting some of their parents as clients as well - :)

hehe......... thats why i wanna work alone, and thats why i wanna do it all in one sitting and stuff. can anyone suggest any products that are good "all in one" products?

Seems like Poorboy's PwC should be something you could get from Ranney and it seems to be thought of as a good all in one product. I have only used it as a cleaner/prep and it worked good for that. I have no idea as to how long it will last.

hmmmm, but from my understanding, PwC dosent really remove swirling. also, should i find something to use over PwC?

Seems like I didn't understand what you meant by an "all in one" product.
To me, an "all in one" product will clean, polish and protect. If you are looking for an all in one that will also remove swirls, I really don't think you are going to find one.

I belive Hi-temps Paint Perfection Glaze is one such product that does all those things. They basically put some sealent in their light cut polish and came up with an AIO product. I just ordered some but havn't gotten a chance to use it yet (it just came this afternoon). Some others have used it and have had good things to say. It might be worth checking out...

yea, i was just asking about PwC, because my plan is..........

*ssr 2.5 with blue/green pad
PwC with blue pad
EX-P or EX (not sure which to use yet)

OR

*ssr 2.5 with blue/green pad
Klasse AIO with blue pad
Klasse SG with polshing pad

OR

*ssr 2.5 with blue/green pad
VM with blue pad
EX-P/EX with polishing pad

OR

*ssr 2.5 with blue/green pad
Klasse AIO with blue pad
**Z-2+ZFX hand/polshing pad (not sure yet)

* = if required
** = thinking of tryin it out

id also like to mention that i did inded get the paint perfection glaze from TOL, and it came today. however, from what my understanding is, the PPG only fills swirls, because it is a glaze, and it would require me to put a canuba (trade secret) on top.
