When that slick feeling is gone...

Detailing Stare
You know how slick the vehicle feels after putting on a coat of sealant and/or wax. Well, after even just a week and another wash it seems to be completely gone. Now I see continued beading, great beading, but that slick feeling is gone.

What is it that has just happened then? Since there is beading and obvious protection, what has happened that the slick feeling went away and what does that mean exactly?

It may be car wash film. After I wash my car I go over it again with a bit of S&W, it makes it noticeably slicker, yet S&W has no wax and leaves nothing on the paint. I think it removes car wash film that has a dry feeling to it. JMO.....

Ah, right you are! I should have mentioned what I am using. As for a quick detailer, that will help keep the slick feeling going.

Until today, I had two coats of UPP, followed with a copat of EX and then numerous coats of Liquid Souveran and a couple or so of Souveran paste. This of course is over a couple months. Today I used the Wolfgang's paint cleaner and sealant.

As for the car wash, I've been using Meg's NXT.

So if you guys put on a couple coats of sealant, wait a week and wash it, it still feels slick after the wash before you do anything else to it?

:yeah The shampoo could be the culprit. Some shampoos will leave some soap residue behind no matter how carefully you think you have rinsed. Once you remove the soap film, the slickness returns. Other shampoos may be very harsh and wind up stripping your wax or sealant.

kee,

I haven't noticed much soap residue with the NXT wash. Are you mixing it 1oz to 1 gallon of water?

Keep in mind the surface won't feel quite as slick with a carnauba top-coat that has been washed, as you would with most sealant top-coats that have been washed.

I rarely check mine for slickness until after I QD and the vehicle has set for a couple hours?

Boss,

Well, I haven't been measuring it, I just pour in what I think is enough and fill the bucket pretty full of wtaer. Plenty of suds, so I know I'm getting enough soap. If the soap is not harsh, if it is ph balanced, then even if I was using too much, which I don't think I am, though I may be, still the soap shouldn't remove the sealant or wax should it?

I guess I shouldn't be too concerned about slickness if it still beads really, really well - right?

kee,

I doubt that the NXT would remove the wax or sealant unless you go overboard with the soap. However, I always take the time to measure out my car wash mix................. certainly doesn't hurt to follow the recommendations. You don't have to get a perfect measure, but it's good to get it close.

If a quick QD after drying brings back the slickness, I wouldn't worry about it.

I think I know what the situation is, but I am just guessing at most. That slick feeling after UPP, EX-P, Pizzaz, etc...is awesome, but your right Kee, it doesn't feel the same a week later. My guess is that the product has officially "cured" or hardened, so the texture is now harder and feels different.

Ah, right you are!

The reason I guessed correctly was I read a couple of posts on the other board concerning Wolfgang losing its slickness after a short period of time. When I was using it, I topped it off with Souveran every week or so, can't really tell any loss in slickness

Chee,

Yes, but I didn't have Wolfgang's on it! I put the Wolfgang's on this weekend. Reread my second post I believe it is. I had UPP, EX and Souveran paste. :) My fault for the confusion though. I was saying right you are - in that I should have mentioned what I was using in my original post. :)

I posted another thread the same day to which no one has replied. I believe the title is "Has anyone ever seen..." something like that. Anyway, noting that I had the same sealants/wax on it, before this weekend when I put the Wolfgang's on, something, whatever it was, really ate into the hood. Left white and BLACK waterspots - even through all that protection. I don't know if it's etched in the clearcoat or not, but the Wolfgang's paint cleanser did not remove it entirely. I'm hoping one of the SSR's will do the trick. Whatever it was, it must have been nasty stuff.

I have decided that it is definitely something in the car wash shampoo or the water.
When using UPP, the slickness remains in tact until washing (and I use 4* Ultimate Shampoo).
If I follow up with Poorboys S&W the slickness returns but not as much as before washing.
However, If I clean the car that has UPP on it with S&W only, then it is as slick as the day it was applied.
I always follow a wash with Meguiars Final Detail and that restores most of the slickness and it lasts until the next wash.
Just my opinion!

It's the carwash/water combo - I lose slickness no matter what I use (with the exception of Plat auto wash) - If you use Spray and Wipe when all is dry and done - it will be right back - Spray and Wipe will remove any remaining residue and leaves nothing behind -

Don't worry Keeotee - I was the same way - "WTF - one week and it's gone????" - S&W or even better 4* Plat gloss enhancer (which has a lil UPP in it to put back in) will keep it slick as schnot.
