another dumb rotary question...

i have a PC. but i'm looking into buying a Dewalt 849or Makita 9227 Rotary. now here comes the dumb question. will the pads (6 1/2) and backing plates (5 & 6) i use on my PC fit the rotary?

You will need to buy a new backing plate for the the rotary( i think the spindle size is 5/8). Just get a backing plate that matches your pads and you will be good to go.

The pads will work, but the backing plate will not. My Makita came witha backing plate, but I haven't tried it with the pads I have (7.5 inch LC Pads)

Good question..
The smaller ones will spin faster and inturn, probably burn your paint faster than the larger ones....this is being debated..

Larger covers more area and does just as good a job

Some people can contol the Rotary better with smaller pads...

I like to use the smaller pads myself. I will on ocassion use both larger and smaller to finish a job, depends on what I have on hand.

IMO, if you are just learning to use the rotary you should use the smaller pads. They are easier to control and will allow you to learn the feel of the rotary faster. It will also save you $ especially since you already have the smaller pads.

FWIW, I like the meguiars W64 BP when using smaller pads.

Most rotarys have electornic speed control so they're going to spin at the same speed regardless of pad.

If you want to get technical, then on the larger pad the outside edge will be spinning faster than the outside edge of a smaller pad.

I always use the large pads because the rotary does have the power to turn it and you'll also be able to cover a larger area quicker. The reason people don't use the large 8" pads on a PC is because it doesn't have the power to run the 8" pads all the time under pressure.

I use 7.5" LC Pads with my Makita. I will show you how I get it to work tomorrow at the meet. I feel they give me excellent control and stability.
