I've got a show in two weeks so I've been trying to get my car into shape for that. It is looking great. The problem is that I've got some kind of overspray all over my car. My office is really close to some industrial building that has some paint smelling stuff coming out of it. I think it might be their fault. The whole car feels just rough and it is just really clear that its some kind of fallout. I really don't have the time to strip everything off and start over again. I'm just really ticked off about all this. Even if I did strip it off I still have to go to work. Its just going to come back. :angry

Here is my question... I've never really been able to figure out how much product is removed in the claying process. This is just on the surface of 3 layers of WG. If I lightly clayed the car, then how much WG do you think it would remove? I wanted to get a layer of Liquid Souveran on and a couple other products before the show. I can't start over, but maybe I can salvage some of it. What do you think?

The first thing I'm going to do next week is find out what is coming out of that building. If this is some kind of corrosive agent then I want to know about it. This is just unacceptable. I won't even have to look far for a lawyer. :naughty Nobody at work is nearly as obsessive about car care as I am, so they probably wouldn't even notice. I've got damages if this blows my show because they touch my car and say it is nasty rough or something. My car should be smooth as a baby's butt and I'm not going to lose just because of their filthy fallout.
 
Jngrbrdman, if you try claying it over your sealants please let me know. I'm in almost the same boat. I'm not going to a show, but I just spent several day doing what I feel is a good job. I just posted almost the same question (claying) yesterday. Since I respect you and your ideas, I would be interested to hear which clay you use and how well it worked for you.

Sorry to hear that you are having this problem, because it does suck. That is not an understatement.
 
Realisticly the fallout should not be on the sealant - removing it with clay will remove the sealant...Claying will remove anything on the surface of the clear..;)

This interview with Sal Zaino discusses claying and the removal of Zaino. According to Sal, light claying will NOT remove Zaino. Of corse, Zaino is known for being more durable than WG so IDK if this applies to WG as well. But, what he says about contamination being like a splinter makes sense, so in theory I think you could remove the contamination without removing all of the sealent.
 
I don't have any direct knowledge about this but.....

It seems to me that only a chemical stripper would remove the sealant. I can't see how claying would get the sealant off. I would think that only particles of contaminant that are higher than the surface of the paint and it's protective coatings, i.e. sealant, would be picked up by the sticky clar bar.

I need/want to hear an expert on this subject and how the hell can you tell if the sealant has been removed, and it's really not very hard to apply another coat of sealant anyway. It's the polishing that takes the time. I can apply a coat of EX-P to my full sized extended cab with a tonneau cover pickup in about 40 minutes.

If I were in your spot jngr I'd clay it and if I had time to protect it...fine and if I didn't have time to slap on a coat of EX it would not make any difference to the shine for the show as it's the polishing that creates the shine. Well....ok, maybe the carnuba adds a little somethun....maybe, but I can't see it.
 
Funny, the same thing happened to me yesterday.

Trying to get ready for a show next Saturday. I washed the car and felt "grit" everywhere!:mad:

They are paving a road near my work and I drove down an adjacent street. I guess the tiny specs of tar/asphalt got kicked up on the sides and rear end of the car.

I did a test spot with SSR1 and it removed it so I guess before the show I will use SSR1, then continue.


I would think that lightly claying would obviously remove some of the wolfgang, but maybe not all of it.

Maybe you could clay, apply one more coat of WG, then wait 24 hours and apply the LS. Easy to say harder to do with a strict schedule, huh?

Dude, I feel for ya -- that really does suck!! Part of my experience over the years, was managing the local operation of a national overspray removal specialist (before the advent of clay, back when their base of operation was in Placentia, CA). Over-spray is covered by almost all insurance policies. I can also personally attest that they can and will pay top dollar to have it removed. As an example, when a local city had a problem with fallout from tree sap, anyone who called and complained was referred to us for it's removal -- 500+ cars @ $250 ea added up real quick!! I might suggest contacting your insurance company, but prior to that, give a call to 1- (800) 835-5858. With 30+ years of experience working directly with insurance companies, handling over-spay claims, George's experience and insight just might be useful to you and all those around your work (you'd be amazed at how quickly they learn about the damaging effects of "industrial fall out" when they are offered it's removal at no cost to them). I also ad that if you chose to contact that lawyer, you might just get the opportunity to handle the entire claim yourself

I appreciate the suggestions, guys. I'm going to lightly clay it and see what happens. I really don't have a choice. I can't roll up with the car looking great and then have a judge run his hand across the fender and feel how rough it is. That would just not be acceptable and I can kiss my prize goodbye at that point.

This is an odd problem that I can mostly blame on Wolfgang I think. This isn't the first time that I've noticed some overspray on my car from whatever it is that this building produces. However, on all of the cars that I have applied WG on and been able to inspect them later, they all have felt much rougher than I think they should. They still look outstanding and I know it is still there, but it seems to be a lot softer or something. Somehow it isn't protecting from IFO like I feel that it should. I had the same problem last year but I had UPP on instead of WG. The roughness was able to be washed off instead of clayed. WG has always felt rough to me a few days after application. I am hoping that topping it with something might help protect the surface and make whatever this stuff is just wash off instead of bonding. Anyone else notice this about WG?

Here is a question that maybe you can help with... I would never take my car to someone else to have this stuff removed. How does it work when you make a claim like this? Do they just assess the damage and cut you a check or something? If they want me to go to some detailer to have this removed then forget it. I'd rather clay it off myself. Maybe I'll get them to buy me a car cover. I seriously think that is my next purchase for this car. I really hate where my office is.... All of the trees around leak sap from their leaves and when the wind blows it sprays this mist of sap everywhere. There are only a couple parking spots in the entire lot that I feel are even safe to park in. With the smokers ashing all over the cars, sprinklers that aren't aimed right, sapping trees of death, stuipd overspray neighbors, a basketball hoop for break times... there just aren't many safe places to park. I may just have to park somewhere else and take a bus the rest of the way. lol (Now that is truely obsessive!)
 
I just skimmed that article which interviewed Sal Zaino. I would like to know just what the hell is in Zaino that keeps Dawn from stripping it off.
 
It has a bit of real Zaino in it. Duh. :doh lol Sal hocks a nice loogie in it and that makes it impervious to anything that would remove lesser sealants. ;)

Well, for those interested I figure I'd post my results so far. Optically there is zero difference after claying. It is fixing to rain out here, so the lighting is pretty good for white. I washed the car and very lightly clayed with a fresh chunk of clay. I cut some off my 200 gram 4 Star bar. I gotta say... I really like that stuff. Anyway, I tried not to put any pressure on it. I used mostly the standing water left from when I rinsed and a little bit of Four Star Ultimate Clay Lubricant. Normally I would use Four Star Spray Wax for the job, but since I need to put another coat of WG on, I figured using a spray wax would be a bad idea. Besides, I wanted to see if the water reacts the same on the surface after I clayed.

The car is now super slick again and the water still beads up and zips off. I washed it again after I clayed and you wouldn't have even been able to tell I did anything unless you felt it before and after. The overspray must have been clear because the clay didn't change colors at all. It was bad enough that I could feel it on a wet car though. While I was rinsing it off I felt the surface to see if I had somehow washed it off. Nope. It was like feeling a wet cat tounge. Now it is smooth and it is going to get a coat of WG tonight and a coat of LS tomorrow. I was thinking of putting on some Pinnacle Signature next weekend and then a coat of P21S the morning of the show. I've always liked the look of different waxes layered, so we'll see how that looks. This car is staying in the garage till the show. I will find some other way to and from work. Jennifer doesn't leave for work till I get home anyway, so maybe I'll just take her car for the next few days.
