Optimum MF discs?

Chris from Optimum let me try them out at SEMA. I was pretty impressed with them and end up picking some up when I got home. The weather hasn't really been cooperative so I haven't had a chance to give them a full workout.

In the limited time that I used them I thought they were pretty good. The cutting pad wasn't out yet when I tried them.

They are already updating those pads, new ones are due any day now, I would wait until the new ones are released to buy any.

I've used them several times now and like them. I like the fact I can even use them with a rotary and there isn't a speed limit like the Megs. But as has been noted, they are nearly obsolete already.

As noted they are new and the cutting disc is not released yet, only the polishing disc. I am watching these as there are reports that they are also made to work with a rotary as well. I really appreciate that even before they released them they are already changing them to make them even better. Optimum is always innovating.

What do you mean they are nearly obsolete? They just came out and actually weren't even supposed to be out that soon. But it got leaked and they went ahead and released them ahead of schedule.

It's a fact they are for the rotary also. OPT stated that from the beginnig. Thats what made their pad different from the Megs pad and was their selling point for the reason to buy theirs. The actual MF is the exact same between the two companies pads. Only the foam is different. And the foam is the hold up on the cutting pad they haven't got it right yet. It's not that they are making them better they are still trying to make them work!

I actually meant to suggest that the OP should go ahead and wait for the new ones to release. But, now to your implication...

So the fact that I paid full price for a beta product (unbeknownst to me) is supposed to make me feel better? I don't recall any statement along the lines of "development isn't complete but here's kind of what they are like." Other manufacturer's get their products leaked (and reviewed) - see Duragloss - and don't release until they are ready. Hell, look at Todd and his teases.

I'm not at all upset because the Opti MF pads I have work great and I will continue to use them. I will also happily purchase the new ones. Obsolete doesn't mean bad - just no longer around.

does anyone know if you have to change out your backing plate or can i use my standard gg6 backing plate with the new pads ?

Optimum has actually developed their own backing plates that are made to work with there new MF pads. You can use your Standard backing plate, but I would expect that the Optimum Backing plate would be better.

I have looked at pics of their new backing plates and like the features they implement.

I didn't imply anything. I think you took my statement out of context. Maybe I should have said it like this. WHAT! nearly obsolete what do you mean they just came out. More as surprised reaction not as an attack on your statement. Keyboards lack emotion and can be misinterpreted.

You can feel how ever you want to feel that's up to you, not up to me to tell you how you should feel. Initially that is how there put out there, as in development ,and very few people had them. Then they were leaked as we know and then were sold as a finished product. Was it in their best interest to do it? That is open for debate. I think this kind of blew up in their face at this point some could even feel deceived by the whole thing. Public trust is a big issue. One way to rectify it but won't probably ever happen, would be to replace the beta versions with the new ones.

And this is the reason they won't be replaced because they do work. Just maybe not as good as the new ones. So in essence it is still a subpar product that was sold. The timing is what is the killer on this for OPT. Hope the air has been cleared on this. :)

I have been having good success with the OPT polishing pads. I have used Poli Seal and the OPT spray polish with great results. I have been using the old style without any issues and find them very durable. You will find instances they do not finish as well as foam but depending on the task at hand these are a very useful tool in your arsenal. Thus far I am pleased with them.

No they don't finish down as well as foam but do have their place in the whole sceme of things. For quicky production work on lot cars they are the pad to go to.

We actually did not start selling a "beta" product. What happened was that in our efforts to make the cutting pads perform the way we wanted, we also discovered changes we would like to make to the polishing pads. Just like when we update a formula when we sell the batches of the current formula. We've had a great response to the current offering and stock is low, so we just decided to make the changes now. The originals work just fine and we have them on BOGO when buying direct, just to clear out remaining stock in time for the release of the cutting pad. On most vehicles you work on, you'll probably not see a difference in the performance, but the new style will finish better on softer paints.
