My rotary that is 15 plus years old is really a grinder, great for super high speeed appliactions like metal polishing. The neighbor got one that has 5 speeds on it, I made the mistake of using it the other day and now love it!!

Where can I get decent deal on one and what are the good brands?

The one that he had is a 5 speed DeWalt about $130.00
 
Milwaukee makes a good one, but it is really HEAVY! They don't call it the "lead sled" for nothing. I have the DeWalt DW849 and like it a lot. I have read where a lot of people like the Makita 9227? (not sure about the #). I'm interested it the PC 9428 rotary that I have recently caught sight of. I think all these are variable speeds. You might check Coastal tools for the best prices. www.coastaltool.com. Not familiar with the DeWalt with 5 speeds, however. Hope this helps.

It does I checked Coastal what a confusing site:wait Anyway I can beat them on price loacally.

What I'm looking for is what brands are others using, the weight is important but not by much. I'm not going to be using this thing every day!
 
I got a makita of ebay last may for around $130 shipped. I hear the Metabo rotarys are really good. The dewalt is nice.
 
I have the Milwaukee Rotary Model #5460 and love it. It is heavier than most but once you get used to it, the extra weight is nice. It is very well balanced. Just check out amazon.com or mytoolstore.com.
 
Makita, works great no problems, Dewalts are great too, you may want to find out about warranty, if their is someone local who can fix it, thats why i have 2 makitas...and 2 pc's ...i don;t want be stuck...
plus i got the seconds ones at great discouts...

i got the makita 9227 got it at coastaltool.com and love it soo much also came with a bag and two wool pads

For me, my RO-ZILLA is a Makita as well. 9227C

Like the handle and balance of it.

I too got it at Coastal..

I also have different backing plates so I can switch from 8" to 7 or 6.5" pads.

Go to your local Home Depot/Lowes and play with several. Find one that's balanced and feels good to hold. Ask if you can feel it operating. Some have high torque on start-up, some not as bad.

Remember, you have to live with it for another 15+ years!

I got the Makita 9227 after my friend who owns a body shop and uses his almost daily showed me his that he has had for about 10 years. Good feel/balance.
 
One thing I would look for on what ever you buy is and adjustable spped dial that can be changed while you are operating the buffer. My Milwaukee has a dial right where you rest your thumb. This allows speed adjustment without stopping or without taking your eyes off your work. Very handy!

Same here. Just get use to the weight and you will love it.
 
Makita 9227 @ Coastal Tool… If you can really beat their prices locally, do it!

Stay away from the Hitachi. They make great tools but this is a new model for them and the speed adjust sucks.

Or TOFTT (take one for the team) and try out the new Porter Cable or Metabo or that $325 Fein and let us all know how they are.
