what to use on brake drums to fight rust ?

Anyone has any good tips about what yo use on brake drums to fight rust ? Last year i i brushed em down to remove all rust and then applied BBQ paint which i thought would hold up, but today i realized that only part of it held up, so now im a bit puzzled.

i heard of etching primer, which i hear etch into the metal to prevent rust, yet i dont know how efffective they are, as i've never used it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

kind of a hopeless battle it seems. You can't paint the entire rotor so eventualy the uncoated parts will rust out and then start to eat at the painted part. You're best bet i would think is a real good undercoating product.
 
Powder coating will still give the same result. If the rust is under the coating, no matter what it is, it will rust!
 
I posted about powder coating under "modifications" forum on a question posted by Mel about painting brake calipers.
Koop is right- that's why it's called cancer. It will attack ANY exposed metal and then spread along the surface of the metal, right under the paint! The paint then blisters off.

Powder coating resists VERY high temps and is extremely durable making it great for high traffic, high temp applications.
 
Powder coating sounds good enoughtto me, but i guess you cant do it yourself though, is that correct ? But the idea of applying rust converter + brake paint...what do you think about it ? I guess it would hold up to rust a good while, right ?

Nope. Undercoating is something else. There are several variaties but they are all designed to help fight rust. It really won't help anymore than anything else but it's black and cheap and does just as good of a job as any other paint for this application.
 
I'm not sure about rust converter under paint of anykind. Anyone try it? I would guess it effects paint bonding as virtually EVERYTHING does!
Powder coating is easy to use, IF you have access to an oven or the money to purchase the curing light. It also has a small upfront investment of the equipment. The powder is cheap and you can purchase neat things like prisms to give it a cool look. You'll get the hang of it quick, then charge a butt load of money to do other peoples tool, carparts, and of course rotors!
 
Some seem to say rust converter does a fine job, yet it takes 12 hours to cure, which is a downside to me, but hey as long as it works.

As to me, i'v enever used rust converter, though i have one spray can of it on the garage shelf.........prolly will try it soon.......along with it, i got brake/rotor spray paint which claim it will not crack, or flake off........i think others have used that paint with good success too.

Eastwood sells Por 15 which turns rust into a primer. Then you could use their frame epoxy. The epoxy holds up really good. I used both prducts on my '71 4x4 on the frame and it looked great for years.
