Engine Detailing ?

Going to Detail my Jeep engine what should I cover up inside when cleaning the Engine I will have before and after shots for everyone. :)

Take some aluminum foil and cover electrical parts such as the alternator, distributor, coil, fuse box, etc. Any areas that should not get water logged or sprayed down. You can wipe those areas down by hand after you have cleaned and rinsed.

Spray and whipe, I wouldent wayste a good product for that type of cleaning I got Eimann Fabrik Hi-Intensity,APC+,Simple Green and all the other Degreasers to work with.

i've been using a steam shark. my mom-in-law bought it for me a couple of years ago and it works great at cleaning engines. it blasts out hot steam that removes grime even in hard to reach places. does an awesome job without getting the bay really wet.

I can't remember where I heard this or if it was reliable but aren't steam cleaners really hard on engines??

Steam cleaners tend to average 200-250 degrees farenheit. This is within normal for coolant for cars, so no worries about tubing. As for the metal, heh, it can take more beating than a steam cleaner can put out. Only real worries are BADLY painted areas.

Steam under pressure isnt good for the connecters as it forces it way in but I guess if you just do the really greasy parts its ok if you dont go all out.

I seen those things on T.V doing all kinds of things showers, boats, stoves,BBQ's,Rims.

Ah yes, be careful around electronics. Nothing to be too worried about, but it cannot hurt to more careful. Otherwise, blast away, you really are not going to hurt forged or hypereutectic metal.

no worries :). the steam from the machine is around 240 degrees but cools down very quickly/short distance from the nozzle. there is, like anything else, some common sense required. no i wouldn't recommend lifting the cover off of the diagnostic plug and blowing directly in it. but as far as hoses, plastics etc, i've experienced no problems at all. i've even used it on vinyl lettering on painted areas to help in removing them. i just use short blasts of steam.

pommer2005, perhaps you may have heard something about larger/heavier duty type of steamers. the shark is really just a household appliance type of cleaner. i like it better than hosing down the engine.

on kind of a side note: my detail shop is located next to a porsche mechanic. he has a couple of engineering students that work for him. well these guys are always rebuilding and tuning on their own engines. the thing i've noticed is that the first thing they do is to remove the hoods and leave them off for weeks and weeks. so i've kind decided that engine areas aren't as sensative as one might think. i mean these cars are subjected to weather 24/7 and they have no problems at all. one of the cars is a turbo charged mr2 and the other is a turbo charged 944 soon to be a sequential turbo charged, upped to 2.8 liter, 500hp+ (detuned) monster.

it's just a little something i've noticed. any thoughts from you guys? i'm not recommending taking off our hoods. i kind of like mine on :D i'll take some pictures of them next time i have my digi-cam over there...

I was cleaning a silverado one and the Alternator started puffing out white smoke as if from a cigarett I immedietly disconnected the battery and coverd it with a rag nothing happand afterwards by I was a little scared of Engine Detailing for a while.

I was just sprayed the Engine down the water to start spraying some simple green the When I looked and the mist of all the steam I see the blue smoke comeing from it.

Frozen,

Cover all the electronic parts, power distribution center, Alt., Air Intake etc.... Then be sure an use a Non Corrosive Degreaser. Here is a link to a product and a write up describing the problems with cleaning today's engines. Many OEM's are requesting the use of ONLY non-corrosive cleaners be used in the engine bay.

I only use Simple Green and APC+ Or Eimann Fabrik Hi-Intensity cleaner. It wasnt a Chemical fire I was just starting to soak the engine after it has been sitting for a couple of hours but the headers where still hot.

Thats a possibility. It doesnt really matter what you do, those headers are going to stay hot for hours. The ceramic coated ones I have in my stang would cool down quicker than normal, except for the fact that the engine puts out more than normal :D
