Jaguar challenge ...

How much suface material is removed when using a PC and fairly agressive product (SSR3 for example)? I mean, how many times can a finish be "restored?"

Same question for the rotary.
 
That is impossible to answer as there are just too many variables invovled. Needless to say, less often is safer.

I usually use DACP with a rotary on my own cars/trucks 3 times a year. That is with a polishing pad. If I use a cutting pad, that number is then reduced.

Restored with a fairly aggressive product, once a year max. or less IMHO!
 
I see thanks for the tips 2hotford. What is the next step above DACP I need something stronger for tougher swirls after 2 passes with a cutting pad didnt toach them. Thanks people tell me Diamond cut but thats for sanding marks and other and its really abrasive this is a fairly new car.
 
For marks that are equivalent to 2000+ grit sanding marks, severe swirls etc... I would use Meguiar's #84 Compound Power Cleaner. It is between DACP and Diamond Cut 2.0 in terms of aggressiveness. Start out with a polishing pad and then move to a cutting etc if the swirls are not coming off. Then step back down through DACP etc..

Be careful though, remaining swirls are not always there from not being able to be removed, but rather the technique. After using a compound (even DACP) always go around the car with #34 Final Inspection getting EVERY bit of compound dust/residue off the car BEFORE doing the next step with a SMR. Otherwise, you will reintroduce swirls back into the paint.
 
your one of those megs guys arn't you 2hotford? Not a fan of your product recomendations but very good advice. I'll thow in my .02 quick on pain thickness. First things first. Look at a ruler. Get an idea of how big or small a mm is. It's larger than most people realise. Now devide that into a 10 lines with a pen. Oh wait you can't. When your looking at how much material is safe to remove you are looking at the thikness of MAYBE two fine ballpoint pen lines right next to one another. Figuring we go by 2hotford's .3 mm recomendation. I'd say you'd be safe with .5-.6 though. Now with the average compounding. A single pass of 3M's PI-III Extra Cut is going to remove on the average about .007 mm (so i've been told) You can do the math. So you do have some room to work with. But then you have to figure these are averages! Some places on a car are going to be HALF THE THICKNESS!!! or even less! These are of corse eges of panels, bodylines, rockers and jams. These areas never get adiquit coverage wether it be from a painter that doesn't like gettin on the ground to paint the rockers the right way or just the fact that paint isn't going to stand on an edge well. Just thought I'd add a little bit for those who still might have some questions.

I have found what products I prefer and stick with them. I always try the next best or greatest, but the plain fact is, if you find something you like, use it. I am sure that you have your favorites as well.

Here are some of my choices in my detailing room. This is NOT meant to show off but rather to suggest that I do have an open mind and use various products from various manufacturers. But, in all fairness, I am a Moderator on Mike Phillips' Personal Detailing website. But that is by choice. And, yes, overall, I prefer the Meguiar's products.

Some of my specialized cleaners like the non-corrosive degreaser for engine cleaning and electronics under the hood. These are mostly Pro Wax brand.

My garage shelves are starting to look very similar to yours !!! Meg's Pro Line is exceptional !!! And I feel that the distinctive smell of S100 is permenantly imbeded in my nostrils:D .

Frozen: the bottles are from Meguiar's. If you contact Meguiar's and ask for a Pro Catalog, it has all of the part numbers for the bottles and the different spray heads.

I understand what you mean about finding a product you like and sticking with it. If you like all the megs stuff that's great if that's what works for you. I just personaly don't undestand it. It's all i have to work with when i'm working at my body shop save for compounds wich i was just recently able to get my painter to switch to my norton stuff. I'm always wishing i had all my suplies at work. Still get's the job done and i will drag out some 34 or 39 from time to time even at home. 34 usualy get's used when claying as it's cheaper than my other qd's and 39 is just diffrent than my apc. Sometimes it woks better but usualy it's about the same. I love the way the citrigell cleaner smells too! nice and orangy.

Like you say, to each his own. I have used all kinds of products and I get the best results from the Meg's. But, alot has to do with the technique as well. As such, once you learn how to use a certain product to its full extent, it is in your best interest to stick with it.

As to the Norton products, just a heads up, if you go to Norton Automotive, there is a free cd-rom of their products and their use. It is sponsored by Dream Car Garage.

I am extremely intrested in the Meguiar's Pro lineup. Due to its availability and large customer base, its easy to get recommendations.
 
I got the cd a while ago after already trying it. Was a decently informative cd. I've been using the products now for about 10 months.
 
Dwayne has all of the Meguiars Pro and Detailer Line if its not on the site he can get it for you I just orderd alot of the Detailer and Pro line from him hopeing to have some pics soon. :D
